weight distribution

just a quick one.
anybody know the weight distribution of a RA23 Celica.

Feel free to post any other relevant info on other cars. Might be usefull one day

if you could find 4 bathroom scales capable of reading up to ~300kg (read; maybe in america ) then you can find the position of the centroid of the car. put a scale under each wheel.

2 scales would even do it if you only want to find the position of it between the front and rear.

the thing you cant find is the height of the centroid. it would be a bit of a drama trying to turn the car on it's side

Ahh corner weights, how I love thee....

Setting corner weights is one of the extremely frustrating and time-consuming parts of the FSAE car. Everytime something in the suspension is touched, corner weights must be done. Everytime tyres are rotated, corner weights must be done. Everytime the car has been sitting there for a while and we want to take it out, corner weights must be done...

sound like a real pain.
i read that the RA40 is around 55% front heavy.
so im guessing that the RA23 would also be somewhere around there.
anyways just thought some one would have had a definitive answer.

Last time the ra28 was on the weigh bridge it was a 55/45 split I think.

My RA23, although it was equipped with a N/A 4AGE at the time, had a 51/49 split, so with an 18R I'd guess it'd be a bit front heavier. Dunno how much difference there'd be between a '28 & '23 though.

To roughly calculate the weight of your vehicle, use this procedure:

Inflate all tyres to 30 psi, a nice even number.

Position car on level ground, your garage floor will do nicely.

Measure the square contact patch of each tyre, in inches, (use a couple of pieces of A4 paper, and a couple of plastic rulers) multiply by 30, and you have the weight in pounds. For example a contact patch 4" x 5" = 20 x 30 = 600, therefore this corner weighs in at 600 lbs.

Last time my car was on a weigh bridge it weighed 890 kg (MK2 cortina) but it would be nice to know the distribution.

maybe there was 2 weigh bridges side by side?

in which case you use static equilibrium equations. sum of forces in y direction and sum of moments

30psi, that one is so simple, drive on, and weigh the car. Drop the front wheels off the bridge and weigh it again.

so basicly move the front half of the car off say up to the B pilla and then weigh the car to make it more accurate then just putting front wheels off scales?

then measure rear of car up to B pilla ?

doesnt matter how much of the car is over the scales as the weight is acting purely through those 4 wheels.

as long as the scales arent too much of a step up, the idea will work good

aircraft are weighed at major services where the weight and balance changes. the plane will have scales [strain gauges] under each wheel group. this way you get centre of gravity in 2D.
Maybe you'd like to try ur local aircraft mechanic and ask them if they'd weigh it for you. it'll cost. used to be at both moorabbin and bankstown, called aero-weigh.
