put a bit of heat into it, if there's loctite in there it'll be cooked, also will help to loosen the nut by expansion.![]()
if that still doesn't work, it might be lefthand thread![]()
Hi
Im trying to remove the 3rd gear from my gearbox, but this nut that holds it in place seems to be impossible to get loose. It has/had some metal locked around the axel, wich also was almost impossible to move. Now i have removed the metal lock thingy around the axel, but i still have no chance to loosen the nut up. I used my IR impact wrench, wich never have let me down before, but this time it ended up slipping on the nut instead.
whats the deal with this nut? does it have some loctite or something on it wich need heat to make it come loose? can it be that it should be turned the other way to open (links)?
anyone dealt with theese gearbox metalocknut thingies before and can give me some help, im very greatfull for any suggestions![]()

beer me!
self locking monkey wrench (i think it might be called a pipe wrench or something)? not the sort you have to wind to get the right gap, the sort that is spring loaded so when it grips and you turn it, it just grips tighter. looks like you are going to have to throw the bolt away anyway looking at the condition of it so something that bites into it won't be a problem anymore..
are you sure it is supposed to come out?
you could also try a cold chisel, and if the nuts badly damaged anyway, if worse comes to worst, you could just use a nut splitter.
If your gonna get a new bolt then theres heaps of ways to take it off... Grind it off?My personal favourite haha
Or tack weld a rod on, then just get a hell chunky breaker and go for gold on it... It seems to me that theres gonna be metal either, 1/ Jaming it on there from whatever youve sheared off the top. OR 2/ That metal has worked its way into the thread somehow and/or somewhere...
Goodluck with it either way man, youve deffinetly done a number on it
Jase
it might be a reverse thread nut. i pulled apart a nissan box a while back, and remember that a nut like that was reverse thread..ie turn clockwise to undo
otherwise you will need to get an oxy torch onm it and heat it up

Heating it up was my first thought, but the bad thing is i dont have anything to heat it with, and the store is closed tomorrow, and i want it off tomorrow.
nut splitter is also a good suggestion, but will a nut splitter be able to break this nut? its 28mm and i cant remember i even seen a nut splitter that can take that big nuts, but i havent really looked for it before either.
i have a huge self locking wrench, i could give that a try, only bad thing with that is if it slips, you usually can kiss ur fingers goodbye for some days.
i dont think its a good idea to weld or do anything that applies too much heat, since the gearaxle thingy cant be damaged in anyway.
Im also wondering if it can be it needs to be turned the "wrong" way, i have tried that too but no luck so far, if anyone can confirm wich way it needs to be turned that would be very helpfull, it seems like most of the toyota fwd gearboxes have this nut and i assume they all open the same way, i have tried to look at some pics on the net, but none have been good enough to be able to see what way is the correct one.
And yes i need a new nut, so damaging further doesnt matter, as long as i dont ruin anything other than the nut itself.
Well i guess my IR impact wrench lives up to its nut bursting name![]()
So if your gonna replace it why not grind the nut off? You dont have to work it all the way down to the thread, just enough that you can snap the bolt off... That way you dont damage the bolt... And if your worried about heat then do small amount by small amount...
Ive done it in the past and its seemed to work....?
EDIT: Plus that way you dont have to worry about which way to turn it either![]()
did the nut have notches on the points before you rounded them off? nothes on the points denotes that it's left hand thread.![]()
beer me!
notches on the points? what exactly do you mean?
grinding it off is an alternative, so i guess thats the best option unless its a left hand thread
not all left hand nuts have these though.
beer me!
hmmm
i actually think it had thoose, i need to check it a bit more carefully, maybe i still can see if its some marks left there.
thanks for the info![]()
Locktab. Un-bending it might help a great deal with putting on the correct socket AND loosening it up.
Is that an "L" on the hex face that is pointing rigtht at the
camera???????????????
It doesn't look very pretty.
try a shithouse socket silghty smaller then the nut and smash it on get the breaker bar and a peace of tube on to it should solve the problem
or
weld a shithouse scoket on the nut and do the breaker bar/tube agen
also if you have a large! set of vise grips that should work
lock the bolt upside down in a vise.......and turn the gearbox![]()
but yeah all the above mentioned methods should get the thing off for you. if your desperate for a oxy torch visit the local....wreakers....metal yard etc there bound to have one they might let you use for 5 mins or something....just explain the situation to them? maybe bring a few beers with you?
As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are
