i know this post isnt too technical but i thought i would put a little update as i get further into the gearbox conversion...

it turns out that i already had a TA22 auto cross member and i didnt even realise it till i went through all my parts. so i bolted it up to the TA22 and it turns out that the front most bolt hole on the Xmember sits on the rear bolt hole on the chassis. therefore i am going to just make a plate and weld it to the Xmember so that i can drill the plate for it to reach the front chassis bolt hole.

also i got my hands on a pretty clean, straight and almost perfectly balanced auto tailshaft... so with this all i need to do is get it re-blanaced and the uni joints changed (to be safe)

though i forgot to check the shifter position to see if i need to cut any more than what has already been cut in the tunnel...

just a couple more things that i do ned to ask...

firstly, this is more cause im a bit lazy, but does anyone know the part number for a 1G-GE /GZE/GTE/FE slave cylinder? hell other than TA22s i know very little bout tyotas and dont even know which cars came with 1G-GE /GZE/GTE/FE motors

secondly, i was just roughing up the original T50 bellhouse to the W/T bellhouse and the starter motor section looks different. am i blind or correct in this case? if correct will the 3TGTEU starter motor still fit?

also the new bellhouse has both starter motor bolt holes as non-threaed unlike the T series ones where there is one side threaded and the other non-threaded. does this mean i have to get a longer bolt and use a nut to fasten it? if so should i get an extra long bolt and dounle nut it so it doesnt come loose from the vibrations?

ok so it is 3 Qs but your answers will be appreciated...

    cheers

hey guys, just wondering about any tunnel mods, did the tunnel need to be "massaged" in order to clear the tunnel with out nocking.

the gearbox fits in with no "massaging but i am just wondering about clearance...does it have enought room for torque twist.

for tailshaft i have heard auto ta22 tailshaft fits (if using std diff)

if the crossmember lines up with a pair of captive nuts in the tunnel just use those ones, no need to use the front ones just becuase the original crossmember did, multiple sets are there to accommodate different engine and transmission combinations from the factory

yes, just use a longer bolt with a nut
just make sure you grind down the bellhousing or starter motor where the nut will tighten up against to make sure that the nut tightens up square
don't use two nuts if one comes loose two will come loose, just use a nut, a spring washer underneath to keep it tight, and a flat washer under that to make sure the spring washer doesn't bite the alloy bellhousing when tightening it up

if your engine and trans is torquing around so much it's hitting the tunnel (where it's not touching at rest) then either your engine mounts or transmission mount are rooted, it should not be moving that much

The tailshaft from an RA2X celica bolts directly to the original dif and the w5X box. its two piece and the holes in the floor are also already on the car. (definately easier than finding a TA22 auto tailshaft)

when i say it doesnt hit at rest i should be clear in saying i can barely fit my index finger between the box and the tunnel. there is some degree of movement in all gearbox and engine mounts under torque...thats why they are rubber...im not saying they should move lots but some movement is expected. hence my Q, has anyone else needed to make mods to the tunnel.

    cheers all. Jamie

if it does torque around a bit it will massage the tunnel out for itself
i still don't reckon there is a problem here

very true. just dont want it to do any massaging arounf brake lines....cause i do not want to be changing those in a hurry.

    thanks mate.

Bolt it up and have a look. The only thing youll need to do is maybe mod the shifter hole depending on the shifter outlet position on the box, and maybe give the tunnel a bash where the starter bell it.
