Default 3R replacements or just get a SC12?

    Hey all,

I am just "toying" with motor uprgrade options for my 65 Crown RS41. I have seen Ross in WA's 18rg conversion - and really like it - however I am keen to retain the 3speed with elec overdrive. I am just wondering if any of these later R motors bolt up ( or adapt easily) to my 3 speed? I am thinking 18, 20, 22 r type?

Alternatively has anyone heard of a SC12 (or SC14) on a 3R? I think it would be too cool to have one. Would a blower just destroy a 3R?

    Later...

Supercharged 3R you say? 45 year old engine, 3 mains bottom end and boost. Something will say,"Enough already!!" quick smart.

Easiest option would be a 5R but they're getting hard to find in decent condition and, to be fair, not really an upgrade.

18RG is cool, but a 22R would also be the goods. There is no bellhousing that will mate these later motors to your old 3 speed overdrive, but a clever machinist should be able to make an adaptor plate to go between the bellhousing and block.

I'd be supercharging the 22RE - would be different.

I was looking around this morning trying to determine how many bearings the 3r had- couldnt find the spec - now I know! Thanks.

BTW gianttomato, you don't happen to have the stock brakes left from when you updgraded do you? I need some parts to get back on the road!

    Cheers Adam

I didn't think they did. I tried this a million years ago. I'll try again.

Unless the 6 cyl overdrive box has a diff pattern to the 4cyl one . I remember puting a 6 cyl crown bellhousing on a W 50 many many moons ago.

So what's the conclusion from this thread? Anything that can bolt up to a w50/w40 can bolt up to the 3speed? If so, that's pretty freakin' sweet.

    Sorry mate,

I can't really give any answers as I don't know myself. I am not even sure if the 3sp box behind the cylinder was the same as the 6 cylinder!

Same box as the sixes.Just a change of the right bellhousing will do the job.

Mine is an ms45 anyway, so it is the 6cyl 3sp+o/d.
Just mated up to a holden 186 atm.
Time to do some research as to what bellhousings for a w50!
