Standard cams in that one, Ren?

I wish I could get a sound grab of my brother's RG, the induction noise really is something else. 44's do make a big difference to the sound, but big cams make a bigger difference.

you aint heard NOTHING until you hear an 18R-GE at full tilt. It will change your definitions of what is the better intake system for an 18R-G.

Well, MAD79R's wagon and my engine are virtually this combo, minus the 210 cams. We both run 88253 heads (improved over 88250) and 9.7:1 pistons.... he runs webers and I run EFI.

Last time I dyno'ed my engine was on a very poorly tuned stock EFI system, and it turned 80rwkW.
The megasquirt has made out of this world improvements to the engine since then. Keen as mustard to power run it now.

    80RWKW... harharhar...

my coughing and spluttering 18R-GU with 45 webbers and mean looking extractor, (everything between is a mystery) makes double that with the CHOKE ON!****

**** of course i have no evidence to back this up...

    Yep, she's a stocko Steve. 88270 / 8.3:1 comp.

I'd love to modify it to the max with 302 cams, 10 + comp pistons etc etc.. but I don't want to risk changing anything - I love the character of the engine as she is!

I'm sure EFI is a more consistently efficient intake system, actually my mum has EFI on her car. You can tell it's always burning fuel at the optimum mixture. But the words 'computer' and '18RG' just don't belong anywhere near eachother imo

Anyone else got some sound clips of your 18R-G? Steve if you could get hold of your bro's that would be awesome - I'd love to hear it.

That is until you add the word 'Turbo' in the mix Then Carby has no place near it.

    Hey guys,

Just wondering what the view on shaving the head on these engines is? Is it worth it? How much can come off with the 9.7:1 comp pistons?

    Cheers, Craig...

I wouldn't bother shaving the head any more than is absolutely necessary for correct clearance of the mating surface.

With my 9.7:1 pistons, the difference is so huge over the old 8.7:1's... you wont care about getting any more.

Be careful with your ignition timing though - they 9.7s dont like too much timing.

in addition to that, you gotta be VERY careful when shaving head or block so that you don't take off enough to cause problems with your valve timing/timing chain... as the cams move closer to the block (thanks to shaving) the timing will change.

    Hey guys,
I have an old engine that was used for rallying years ago and it had 92mm pistons with (I think) standard compression, does anyone know of the pistons and where I might be able to track some down. It took the engine out to 2.2lt and had awesome torque.

    Well guys,
I do have the 253 head and the 270 head. 253 head running at the moment.
the 9.7.1 pistons and the 230 Non adjustable agressive cams and the full EFI gear.
At this early stage I can tell you that it has more grunt and torque than the standard
18rgeu. and the 18rgu with carbbies. though I did not check what carbbies cam off the GU motor.
Mine is a 18rgu with the extra gear as mentioned, plus the geu oil pick up.
Waiting for the car to come back from electricians for minor work.
