1985 !!! I was in 5th Grade !

Justen - Matti's was the first 3T-GTE I found any information on, Hows this for a trip down memory lane.

I bought my first Celica in 1992 and discovered the twin cam GT spec options from the factory handbook. I didn't manage to get my hands on one for a while tho as I was about to buy one and got distracted by the lure of the "new" RWD Import 16V 4AGE (in 1993) and the Screwdriver adjustable mircoleb was also installed - Thank christ those days are gone lol. Mind you it sure as hell upset the Ford and holden brigade.

But anyway - Back to the 3T-GTE tech and enough of this oldtimer I remember when crap.

Matti really stretched the limits of the stock ECU....he was chasing me with the turbo 18RG

I was racing a big block Buick when I first bumped into Dick (that doesn't sound so good), and I drove a stock HiLux. Being into big block American stuff doesn't really place you in the same circles as 3TGTE people until you go racing (BTW it would have been 1991).

Meeting influential people at the drags soon saw 18RGEU and Microtech installed on the HiLux.

Thankfully now days there has been that much development with aftermarket ECU's that you wouldn't even consider and old Delco unit

Great ECU for a Porsche 911 and 3T-GTE engine.

Google: The engine is fuel injected using Bosch injectors and controlled by a standard AC Delco computer

i need the oil filter number for the 3tgteu and also the engine oil you recommend for a engine thats done 150-180,000km thanks

go to Toyota and ask for a D2 oil filter. I would try penrite HPR15 and see how that goes for you.

has anyone run more than 15psi on a stock motor? that has been rebuilt in the last 5,000ks though not an old motor? also my 3tgte (intercooled Ct26 running 10psi) at about 5700rpm up, the boost creepsfrom 10 to 13psi under full load? could it be that the wastegate is to small? i am running a GFB bleed valve and was considering going to electronic boost controller and running 15psi all the time, the engine still needs to be dyno tuned properly runs a bit rich if thats anything worth knowing.

Hey guys can you recommend a head gasket for me or how I go about getting the right sized one to suit my engine.

I bought a worked 3tgte a couple of months back with a fair bit done to it,by the looks of things it is all fine and just needs the HG done after taking it apart.

Whats the recomendation? Copper,metal,width?

You can
a) get a stock one from Toyota - these are only good up to 86.0mm bore diameter after that, the gasket hole is a bit small for the bore. These have limited success depending on boost, whether or not O rings are present, and head bolt choice.
b) get a copper gasket from Ridgecrest Engineering (requires O ringing for best results)
c) get an HKS MLS gasket (this is the both the easiest and the best solution IMO as it requires no O ringing).

I recommend head studs in ALL applications.

Have you looked at the Kameari metal H/G?
they do:
3.0mm 32,950yen

all with a 90mm bore
I've got the 0.8mm for the 2T-G

Hi All,
I have had some mixed feelings toward the 3T GTE and 2T/3T GTE this week.
SYCO2T's engine went real nice, nice and quite and burnt real clean from start up (using a run in oil for the first 500km and while it was being run on the dyno), the first oil change he tried the Penrite HPR 15, which I have said here and elsewhere, is OK. SYCO2T's engine huffed and puffed oil smoke straight after being given this oil on the first oil change. The car has done less than 3km since the oil change.

I have since been advised not to use a semi-synthetic!

I will keep you posted after Chris rids his engine of this oil and see if the situation improves.

On the high side, another 3T GTE that we put together (Johnny and I) recently turned 264hp atw on 18psi. The car (a Corolla naturally) was seen sliding all over the shop at the powercruise at WSID last week.

A 15w60 weight oil should have been fine in a 3T-GTE and whilst I don't use penrite oils myself they are typically not a bad thing. If the engine was running great on the run in oil and the ONLY thing changed was the oil and filter theory suggests this particular engine combo just doesn't like the oil. Different brands of rings and ring gap sizes etc etc etc can easily mean that some engines just don't like some oils, we see it here from time to time.

Personally I like the 20W50 Royla Purple, its a full syntheric tho and will leave a bigger dent in the wallet (Around $80 for 5L)

In Chris's case I'd be putting in a good quality mineral oil for the next 1000k's before I tried a synthetic again.

Nice work on the other 3T-GTE - 195rwkw at 18psi is an awesome result !

Rod,

After I spoke to you, I spoke to Alex. He described the problem for me, after I explained the situation; ie I told him that Penrite HPR was used as the first oil change, he then went on to say that he has seen it happen where the engine starts to misfire and carry on. Like you, he does not really like to product.

Alex did point out that it was specifically a fuel vs oil thing too, this may explain why I never had an issue?

As per our recent chat on the phone oils do impact allot on not just lubrication. I mentioned to you at the time that the testing Dave did on the Royal Purple oils supported the claim of reduced emissions. Here is part of the blurb from the Royal Purple web site:

Out of curiosity what fuel was Chris running ?
