Angry 1JZ Cressida was running rough, now won't start.

Hey everyone. Hope someone can help me.

I have a '92 Cressida with a 1JZ-GTE (non-vvti) engine and manual transmission which I have had for about 5 years now. About a week ago it started running a little rough under load. Now it has started struggling to start altogether. Sometimes it will run for a few seconds then just die. The spark plugs are platinum iridiums and were changed only 12 months ago. I also checked the fuel pressure and sensor connections and everything looked OK there too. The check engine light has not come on so it is hard to diagnose.

Any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Which spark plugs? make/code.

    OEM ECU?

    4-row or 2-row ECU?

rough under load is often due to coilpack breakdown....

I had this issue with my car (JZX81 ECU), it turned out to be the stock ECU blew after the stock caps went and it took out the ECU. Mine put up code 14 once i checked the codes (lack of iGf signal meant the car wont run).

The plugs are NGK Laser Platinum BKR6EP-11. The ECU is stock. I have ordered a full set of new coil packs so I will let you know how I go once they are fitted.

I would pull ecu out and take covers off it and check inside it for leaking caps like others have mentioned
also does the check engine light come on with just ignition switch on and engine not running as it might not be hooked up at all

Yes, the check engine light comes on without the engine running and stays on for a second or two after the engine starts, then goes out. I will see how I go after replacing the coil packs. I hope it isn't the ECU.

I had ignition issues too, but it was funny what ended up being the problem.

Around 12 months ago, I replaced the ignition plugs/connectors with new ones. However, I soldered the pins onto the wires, aswell as crimping them. Unfortunately, one of the crimps broke the solder, so ignition was intermittently cutting out.

But anyway... I replaced coil packs with new ones... didn't change much. But I only discovered the source of the issue after buying the coil packs. Re-soldered the pin and problem gone.

Second issue is that I was still running the same original spark plugs since the engine transplant, since 2005 until 2 months ago. Replaced with BKR7EIX, and I re-gained responsiveness under vacuum.

I would do this! ECU's for 1J's are notorious for capacitor leakage...(just had same issue with mine)

They all do it, something about dodgy knock off caps being sold to Toyota back in the day.

Thanks for all your help. Will take a look at the ECU. Have just noticed quite alot of soot coming out the exhaust. I am guessing this is a result of the engine running very rich. Could this be a dodgy oxygen sensor or catalytic converter?

could just be over fueling trying to compensate for whatever your problem is...

I guess it is all trial and error until it is running properly again.

Hello the only things I know about this stuff is the crank angle sensor and cam angle sensors/wires must be in good condition and

THE SAME POLARITY swap the wires on either and engine NO GO
