Would runing a stock honda ecu be ok in VIC?
As it is a stock factory ecu.
Noted, but good to see the argument continues without me too
I'll keep to using my toyodiy skillz in this forum.
Also as I mentioned before, the topic of engine modifications is not going to get very far considering any mention of aftermarket ecu is going to get quickly shot down since we're talking about VIC here and their tight rules regarding programmable ECU's. Even with an engineers report they'll be defected and sent for EPA tests every time the car is pulled over.

No because it is not the factory ecu for that car. Can't guarantee emissions are going to be as per factory
For outright convenience the 4agze seems to be definitely leading. Would you know what sort of times a midly modified ae92 4agze motor could do 0-100 and 1/4 (mildly modded would be exhaust and nevo pulley).
My biggest concerns with the 4agze motor is having to cut the bonnet, I would want to start off with a fmic kit straight away (if there is space)
I'm quite curious what the fuel economy would come out like as a daily too?
I am still looking at keeping just a 4age 16v smallport, since the concept behind my modifications will include buying a Seca SX and transplanting the whole lot over (basically all of interior, brakes, efi tank, motor, ecu, dash, body loom etc). If anything the motor would only receive bolt ons where I can.

When I was driving my aw11 to work a few times a week, it was averaging around 10L/100km, stock bigport GZE. Also keep in mind I didn't travel very far before I blew the head gasket, but I maintain that whilst it was running, it felt very nice, no hesitation in the RPM range and smooth delivery to around 5,000rpm or so. Anything beyond that RPM it would keep revving happily, but I felt torque drop off a bit, this is where a larger crank pulley greatly helps I'm told.
I could probably get better mileage, but that was driving along the freeway at 80 + 100 with mild traffic, and also giving it a decent squirt every so often, since you need to enjoy it as well.

You need to get the whole engine/ECU/emissions gear signed off by an engineer over here. At that point you could probably swap it around for another ECU, but unless you are incredibly good at wiring, they will spot it.
I wouldn't say its quite common, but it's happened often enough in Victoria for them to know what they are looking for. You could probably hide an aftermarket ECU inside of a toyota ECU box, but it's still possible they might find it.
Rules change between states over here. It's very annoying, not because of what you can/cannot do, but the whole level of confusion and doubt that occurs here between police and owners of modified cars.
Also if you own a car with a factory ECU that's programmable, like an old school PGM-FI ECU, or a modern ECU like soobies, you're still somewhat targeted and sent for EPA testing, but yeah it completely blurs the lines between what is and isn't modified.

I always find that rules that are blurry between the lines are very difficult to follow especially for someone wanting to do the right thing.
I find there is quite a few car modification laws that aren't well defined within one state, let alone across Australia. I am not sure why one state has one rule, when we are all sharing the same land in Australia. If its acceptable in NSW or SA, i'm not sure why its not acceptable in Victoria.
I can understand when it comes to the environment with EPA testing but some things are a bit too over done.

Here when i did my engine swap, i went to pick up the engine, fitted it, put the coil over in, changed the ECU, fitted AE111 brakes, once done, went for certification. Took maybe 1.5 hours, no smog checks or anything. Made sure all was safe was happy issued my certification plate all legal.
Decided i wanted a new exhaust, got one built, removed cat and fitted, no issue.
Maybe you should move here.
some sounds of what to expect..
i had a JDM AE86 about 10 years ago,
went from JDM Bigport GE
to AE92 Smallport (Map) GZE
then to Smallport NA, decked for compression, 20v ITB's, ported (kinda waste of time with stock cams), got running around on stock Map GE ecu.. then went to Adaptronic..
PLENTY of video's on my Youtube channel -
here is what an NA 16V sounds like at 8000rpm with a spark only 'soft cut' rev limiter -
http://youtu.be/2rzZWkqzzwk
same car/tune etc on the 1/4 mile (not what it was built for) 15.5
http://youtu.be/mTnMno0mkBw
there are a few video's on my Channel (MrExtremeBoost) on when the car had the GZE.. stock pulley's.. ran 13.9 but only marginally faster MPH than i did with the NA motor later on.. the GZE strong suit is crazy torque and power out of corners, and heaps of fun on the street..
watch this GZE incar video http://youtu.be/4uS3uyRiIgI - you can see how responsive and torquey the GZE really is.. the burnout was second gear, lightly heal & toe on the accelerator..
i went back to NA in the 86 as i just couldn't keep a driveline intact.. T series Crown wheels and pinions, axles, a few T-50's.... just wasn't worth it..
the smallport made 118rwhp 'tuned'. the GZE made 139rwhp stock... FWIW also...
in those video's also is an AE92 CS with Silvertop 20v conversion, stripped out completly.. don't know what was done to it ECU wise, was quick, but not BS quick.. revved over 9k easy video here - http://youtu.be/8KnWvU8yKEg
i currently have a Series 1 AE92 SX, which has it 24 year old Smallport 4AGE, recently done TRD .8mm Head gasket, ARP studs (toyota didn't have any bolts and mine were rusty/pitted), Bigport Cams, bit of an intake, and i have some BT 20v Extractors and secondaries.. most of the later video's are from it..
watch enjoy the sounds, and noises i don't edit any of my video's with stupid music so it's all raw engine sounds... there must be at least 100 Video's in some shape or form of every 4AG variant i have had on my channel!

I've got a Beams 3sge just sitting here, c'mon and drop it in Adrian![]()
haha I would love to horse but theres a fair bit of work in that conversion. haha
I ended up picking up a 4age 16v small port which I will put in place of the 4afc motor. I've nearly got my old motor out.
At the moment I will work away
Once its all in and running, I think i'd like to try a set of Bigport cams one day. With a bit more duration and lift i'm hoping t
I dunno why but the 4age bigport seems to be more fun to drive, maybe its because the first 4age I drove even before buying my first car. It was a mates AE82 Twincam with an exhaust. TVIS was just
I'm not sure why but I didn't feel that attached to my Seca SX in the past, I started off with a 4age 16v but unforunately it ran into some issues and I ended up pulling the motor out for a 20v conversion. Even with the 20v conversion I didn't feel that attached to the car. Its always been a running issue with me in the past that with a rather short attention span I go from car to car. Partly because I think I might have spent too much and go for something cheaper to start all the modding all over again.
I've balanced my emotions now haha. I'm just happy getting an ae92 sedan that i've always wanted from day one. My original dreams were to make it supercharged.
I know this will sound really strange but I enjoyed the sensation of driving the ae92 sedan with its 66kw or so than the Toyota Caldina. I think when your in love its hard to stray haha. I went for a drive in the caldina, and then jumped in the corolla and while it did feel slower, it still felt nimble and fun. I could imagine the 4age 16v small port with some bolt ons will just encourage that feeling.
Heres a quote from the original toymods site by me back in 2003 lol
http://forums.toymods.org.au/index.p...t=0#msg_209289Hey,
I've had a few concepts for a while about a ae92 CS sedan with the following
A engine swap (maybe 20 valve or even a 100kw)
SX dash
Levin GTZ Seats
a nice stereo
lowered a few inches
Front strut
16" mesh spokes
Now I'd still have to buy the car etc.
But yeah i drove the CS (ae92 sedan that dad owns)
