Gmonkey... i going assume when you say race of course you mean on a track...

With the ST it could have been either a GE or FE i'm not 100% sure I think we got both and even Wikipedia lists the ST with both so check your engine plate in the engine bay to find out for sure.

Look modifying and driving cars whilst its nice to get an opinion it comes down to the individual and can be an intensley personal thing what might seem like a giant waste to others can be someone elses dream.

Thats why people put 1G's into celica's and 1MZ's into MR2's, or in one case here a 1UZ into a GT4 ahem sorry Justen a GT8.

Its each to their own. My advice is this everyone can agree the 162 benefits greatly from suspension work like nearly every car. A Disc brake rear could be another mod you might find handy if you decide to get into some khana or track fun. Motor work look we might see it was a waste but i have to admit when i was your age I did the intake and exhaust thing and i loved it. Nowadays i see what a waste it was but its your choice.

The golden rule is its your first car your gonna think its the best thing since sliced bread make it yours, enjoy it, look after it and let it reward you in that special relationship that is a young motor fan and his first car.

It's the 3s-fe. Also how would one go about including pics in the my ride thread? As far as I can see you can only put pics in from other sites.

Just upload them (I use www.imgur.com) then use img tags - they are [ img ] url of uploaded image [/ img ]

    Without the spaces.

If they are already online, right click on them select "Copy image location" then insert that url inbetween your img tags.

yeh i agree with most people
just look after it well and replace stuff that needs replacing and you'll have a car that will last another 10 years easy.
i recommend signing up to your local motokhana club to, really good way to get some driving skill under your belt (plus fwd's make motorkhanas easy lol)

O.K, so what exactly is a motorkahna club? I have never ever heard of one. Also I doubt I will have a local one as I live in a small country town in Australia.

Motokhana's are sort of a test your skills on a course type deal.. usually either on dirt or tarmac. against the clock.

Can be a dirt track or a skidpan with a course made up of witches hats.

as for 3 yrs worth of savings being able to buy me something great, I am ot sure if thatswhat I want, 3 yrs seems like so long, not to mention that I kinda love this car and not just coz it's my first or anything like that, it's the same car as my bro in law and keeping it that way is pretty appealing to both of us. plus I love alot of 80's cars and they are getting to be hard to find in (not to blow my own horn cause it's no thanks to me) as gooder condition as mine.
I hope eveerything i have written makes sense, thanks for all your advice.
since no-one else answered, it's the studs holding the wheels on. 4 stud or 5 stud, and the PCD (100 or 114.3 are the 2 usual ones) is the distance between the studs, measured diagonally. Basically. 5 stud is a bit harder to measure as they are not opposite each other...

    so people will say 4 x 100 or 4 x 114.3 or 5 x 114.3 etc etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel_sizing might help with a bit more info

The amazing thing about common sense is it's not that common...

ahh the old st 162 celica

i had one when i was on my p's i tried to pimp it out to impress the girls as well, with fur and neons.

modifications wise your pretty limited. especially with the 3S-FE engine. pretty sure that engine was ment to be the more fuel economic engine rather then the more sporty 3S-GE. and you'll probably spend more money on keeping your car running then modding it.

    3s-fe: 85 kW
    3s-ge: 110 kw

a basic list of mods you should look at i believe are:
    > get a new exhaust on it, preferably with a new cat and extractors (3s-ge extractors will fit your car)
    > replace your stock fitler with an enclosed POD filter and cold air intake (the stock one would be fine)
    >run her on premium
    >white line make front and rear sway bars, will help your suspension
    >new shocks and springs. you can decided to lower it if you want, might handle a tiny bit better but its annoying as hell when you scrape underneath your car on everything.
    > get rid of the drum brakes. they are not your friends
    > get the interior back up to scratch. you will feel better about your car when you have a nice clean, new interior.

or just lie to everyone and say you have these modifications. most 16 - 18 year old girls will have no idea if you have these mods or not and would easily be more impressed by a shiny paint job, some neon lights and decent interior and a few lies about what your engine bay has.

or save your money and hold out for something better in 3 years. believe me you'll be glad you did. i went from a 162 celica to a twin turbo toyota soarer. and just your whole driving experience changes when you upgrade for better and worse.

a link to my old 162 with some new photo's i just found on my computer

and just remember you can lose your licence if you get busted with "mods" (or drive like a twat), especially for ghey things like pod filters

oh, and the whole point of these rules is so that is IS bleak while you are on your P's... and thus hopefully survive them with all your limbs and heartbeat intact

    IMHO:

Premium is a marketing tool, unless your car actually requires it (due to high compression/poor design), then there's NO performance gain to be had. The only slight gain is being able to run more ignition advance, but not really worth it. Premium fuel actually contains slightly less energy per litre than standard, due to the additives and modifications made to allow it to be compressed harder before preigniting.

Drum brakes aren't the greatest, but for street work, not worth the cost of replacing (unless you find a complete rear end at a wrecker for $50 )

sorry i did forget to mention a few or most things in that list i posted require an engineer to approve them for them to be street legal and not have mr plod come and take away your license and give you a massive fine.

would the brake lines need to have work done to them to have disc's put on?

kinda wrote that list a basic list so the guy can go out and try and do a few him self and learn alot on the way. wasn't meant to be full serious as a guide to make the car in a racing power house

but yes when i was 17 and new to cars i thought my apexi pod filter on my celica was awesome. then i grew up a little, did some researching and asked opinions and found out they are actually pretty gay.
