Default How long might my engine last?

8 months ago I bought my self a RN85 Hilux with a 22R, the motor did have a slight timing chain rattle which doesnt really bother me all that much. I'll get around to it one of these days, however people keep reminding me about it and so I am getting a little paranoid.
It is noisy when first started and is there intermittently as the engine warms up. I am 100% sure it is the timing chain, and I'm not just being a girl
I am going on 2 long trips in a few weeks (3000km all together) and I dont want to break down out there somewhere, but I also cant really afford to fix it before I leave. The motor has 415,000 km on it and am unsure of its previous service history.

I know Toyotas are built tough but what may the odds be that it will last the next 3000ks?

At what interval is the timing chain change reccomended on these motors?

May pay to have a read of this

    http://www.brian894x4.com/timingchain.html

Granted you can't trust everything you read on the net but with that many k's on the clock you are taking your chances.

Hope you can get out of it either cheaply or it does the 3000 k's without causing you grief

    She'll be right.
Drove mine around with 2 pistons broken in 4 places for 6 months.
Replace the gears as well as the chain at a later date, dont rev the snot out of it and all will be good.

My daily has done 450,000 kms on the original engine, the timing chain has been rattling constantly for the past two years.
I think you would be ok but it would be a bastard to get stuck.

there is a warning I've heard.... the timing chain left un-repaired can cut through part of a case. or housing causing a coolant and oil mix

Thank you all for your replies, I think I will take my chances with it this time, but I will do the chain and gears when I get back as I have another trip in November. At least if it does break, the worst I'm gonna have to do is get a new motor, and I've done that before

It'll be a shame though if it does break as it is still the original engine for that 'lux.

This is true. The oil/coolant mix will result if the chain wears through the timing chain cover. This only occurs if the plastic guides have broken off, which I would presume yours have

Just nip the cam cover off and poke a torch down the front and have a look, you *should* be able to see if its rubbing on the cover.
