Amazingly even uglier than an RA40
I'd say go with an n/a 2J and add turbo...depends how fast you want to go and how much modding you are up for?
I have access to a 79 fox body mustang for a reasonable price. They are massively popular in the states for drag duties as they are plentiful and light as american cars go at 1150 kg, not too much more than a RA40 second generation liftback celica, even look similar dont you think?. I know its not yota but it would be different!
My question is which generation of engine and box to go for? Or even other engine conversion options? It would be a standard engine at first with the view to turn the wick up at a later stage for some quarter mile time.
Thoughts?

Yes they are um an acquired taste lol. Why start n/a? because the standard manifold and turbo is best replaced anyway? What sort of psi will an n/a take? low 12's, high 11's would be nice on a street tyre.
n/a engines are very cheap. You'll be going stand alone ECU anyways i imagine, so no need for factory ECU. n/a 2J will take 1 bar easy which with the right sized turbo will get 1150kg down the strip in the 11's....maybe quicker on a decent tyre?

Nice, so these things really are fairly bullet proof then. Whats a 2j's n/a static comp?
I assume manifold are easy to come by in aftermarket, 6boost? Gt35 or something smaller?
I assume autos are more common, do they hold up well or is a manual a better option.
Would run a Microtech EMS.
Pretty bullet proof yup. Egay manifolds are cheap so keep with the budget theme
manual/auto, up to you and what your budget can handle....tricked up auto for a drag can i would have thought? Comp is high 9's i think...no worse than my 1U which will happily take 1bar +.....E85 and/or WI will help.

What does a 2jz with box change hands for at the moment?

You think the mustang II looks better justen??? Urgh.
Funny you should mention the II Hiro, the fox is one of my old mans unfinished projects (he has lots lol) and was given to him as payment for respraying a mustang II in red for a fella down here bout ten years ago. As for the fox imagine it low with some dish and I think it would look horn. That and a later shape front clip bolts straight on and it would be a looker. Plus some straight six yota powa and I think it would turn some heads for at least being different even if ugly in some people's eyes lol. Check this pic give you an idea of what im thinking of.
that looks ok i think!
gotta love speedhunters eh
No Signature.
The Fox-bodies can be a bit hit-and-miss, the Aeronoses tend to look better than the Foureyes though but each can look awesome and each can look crap. One thing to remember is that the series ran for a ridiculously long time (something like 13-14 years, encompassing the entire 80s decades) so the design did evolve a bit over that period.
I've always liked this Fox-body

that Mustang II looks like an uglier MX32 Cressida.
...... butt scratcher?!
Yeah hiro the green Johnston aeronose was a boyhood favourite! They can vary from downright ugly to quite tuff looking. A thirteen year production run also means parts are plentifull and cheap!! They more I have thought about this the more I think I could make it a serious steer not just a straight line hauler. They are a strut and rack front end so I'm sure a coilover and big brake conversion wouldnt be hard, just a little cost. And the rear is a trailing arm solid which also gives lots of options.
