    Default cant get engine started - 12v/plenty of earth/getting signal but no spark

    just wired up the 4g63, went to crank over and nothing.

    So far have narrowed it down to no spark. using the factory twin spark coils running a stinger 4424 and ignitor. Have tested the coils and they are getting 12v and plenty of earth. They are getting a signal but they are not creating any spark! If i had hair id be pulling it out by now this is driving me nuts.

    Can anyone throw me some suggestions

    - is ECU getting a crank trigger signal? (laptop should show rpm)
    - earth of ignitor module is to chassis or engine block? (am assuming is an EMS ignitor)
    - what dwell time?
    - what setting is 'Ignition Fire Edge'? (pg 87 of manual)

    Do you have 12V at the coils when it is cranking (e.g. has STA power to coils)

    +1 for crank angle pulse to ECU not present

    I gather you have a twin igniter to run the twin coils. With ignitors and coils and crank/cam sensors, there are hundreds of different combinations, and some of them don't work...

    Draw up a wiring diagram of how you think it should work and we may be able to help.

    im not seeing movement from the tacho on the computer screen, but i saw a signal from the coils on the multi meter, its getting 12v to the coils but havent tested the power on the coils when its being cranked

    motor is getting fuel, you can smell it. Ive been told it wouldnt fire the injectors if it wasnt getting a signal, does this sound correct?

    it is a stinger 4 coil ignitor wired up for 2 coils. I spoke to the stinger supplier and asked if this will be ok and he said yes it should be fine.

    i noticed on " no of teeth per cam cycle" its set as"multi teeth off"

    STA = 12V+ when cranking

    If the laptop/tuning software is not showing any rpm when cranking, you need to look at the ignition trigger setup (e.g. what is inside CAS, are there 1 or 2 triggers, tooth count per crank/cam rev, etc)

    which Ign out pins are you using?

    Fuel smell could come from a priming squirt - ignore that and look for rpm signals at ECU/tuning software.

    sorry i should have mentioned i had the ecu wiped and had an evo 7 base map loaded on to it, will test for 12v when cranking tomorrow.

    i take it that you have your laptop hooked up while you're doing all this?

    until you have the spark and crank-triggering sorted out, I'd suggest pulling the fuel pump fuse.

    pull the plugs out so you can do a fair amount of cranknig without killing the battery.

    looking at your engine pics, it has a crank trigger? and a cam trigger? are you using both or just the crank trigger?

    being waste-spark it will proably have a multi-tooth wheel on the crank snout and a home signal from the cam sensor (CAS on exhaust side at rear of motor) ... so the "no of teeth per cam cycle" setting should probably be a number.

    Am waiting for a Evo 7 manual to come from off scribd but do you know what pattern the crank and cam triggers are - and whether you are connecting to them correctly (e.g. are they VR or Hall Effect sensors)?

    it has both c.a.s and cam sensor yes and both are wired in. last question i know the cam sensor is a hall effect type, c.a.s . . . im still trying to find out from a whole bunch of 4g63 know it all's

    possibly solved this problem, Someone has mentioned to me that the evo coils have their own internal ignitors and i am running an external stinger ignitor. Anyways tomorrow i will find this out for sure

    Does the stinger control the dwell or do you need smart modules?
    If it controls dwell you need dumb ignitors that have no dwell preset and If it doesn't you'll need to find some 008 modules (volvo 240 / JD-carb camira) that have a 3.5ms dwell preset in them (smart module)...
