Have you checked for error codes. What rpm does it started spluttering.
1990 SW20 MR2 turbo Gen III 3S-GTE conversion, 3" exhaust = 264.9rwhp
1985 JZA61 2JZ-GTE + TO4Z = 442.1rwhp @ 18psi
1991 JZA70 Limited 2JZ-GTE vvti GTX30/76r
1994 GZX90 Mark II 1GZ-FE V12
1980 MA45 Undergoing Restoration
Not getting any codes out of the system
it's usually over 3500/4000rpm that it starts spluttering

Just for future reference if the fuel pressure regulator is too small/pump too large then it may not be able flow enough fuel back to the tank.
the basic principle of a fuel pressure reg is to restrict the amount of fuel able to flow back to the tank after it has been through the fuel rail.
so, yes it is possible for the reg to be too small and to cause rich running, however i don't think that this is the case for you.
** have you checked for blown caps in the ecu?
Now - 1988 GX81 Mark II- 7MGTE, GT35R, TiAL 44m, Microtech, 550cc injectors, R154, Xtreme clutch, LSD.... Low boost tune done = 330rwhp@1 BAR...
Then - 1989 MX83 - The big scrap heap in the sky...
i just pulled the ECU apart and shes pristine. not a single blown cap or anything out of place. there was a tiny bit of solder floating around in there but i scoured the back of the boards (and the front) thoroughly trying to see if it had come off it somewhere, but all solder was intact (so it must have been foreign..). ECU perfect as.
strangely enough when i just tried to run the TE1/E1 diagnostics.. there was absolutely no check engine light flashing. in fact i just noticed that theres no check engine light when the cars in the ON position period. (the globe is fine.. i tested it).
I just had a thought.. would it do this if one of the knock sensors wasn't plugged in? (KS#2). In fact the ONLY lights that come on when the IGN is at ON is the Cat Temp Sensor, the Headlights Light, the Handbrake and the Battery Charge lights. Handbrake seems to be the only one that will switch off (obviously when the handbrake is down). The other 3 are permanently on.
Cat Temp Sensor is easy, I can just unplug that bulb, but I'd like to keep the other two functioning normally.. oh and get the Check Engine light back, the Oil Light, and the High Beam light back.

Hi hamgatan. I've been following your thread with great interest as I had a similar problem with my 1JZ. I even found that one of my vacuum hoses had come loose from the same location as yours and if I plugged it back in the engine would die.
After some trial and error, we finally opened up the ECU and found some burn marks on the bottom of the PCB. I got another ECU and everything has been great. If you have access to a spare ECU, it might be worth giving it a go.
Good luck!
yeah i might give it a go. cant hurt i guess. i did pop it open and inspect it carefully though and everything looked immaculate..

I just gave it another sprint around the block. It appears to only start misfiring bang on 3000rpm..
