Sludge build up is sometimes due to lack of oil changes, crap oil or blowby.

adrian - you've had a 3s before - same shit different smell. Carbon clena the head by sucking subie cleaner through a vac hose at approx 3,000 rpm.
Run an engine flush through it and fresh oil.
put new plugs in and adjust timing.
PS - 91 RON fuel is shithouse in anything. Use 95 at least.
and if you're gonna try and screw some more timing into it please use 98 as youll ping even more

I imagine the factory headers and exhaust are choking it up a bit too. look into upgrading these

95RON e10 is good stuff and usually cheaper then 91RON

i have always found the ethanol to help cars that ping.... my old 7m with loads of comp (230+) would ONLY run well on united's 98 or 100RON e10.... any other 98RON (v-power, synergy, bp ultimate etc) and it would ping its tits off constantly

why did u clean the pistons 200+ psi is a good thing!!

that sludge is not 'prone to the 5sfe' it's prone to the dickheads that normally buy them brand new.. and don't service them for 20-30 thou intervals..

there should not be a problem with sludging on any engine if the oil is changed frequently...

Thats true but according to my bro who runs an automasters at least 50% of the 5SFE's that come through his workshop as 1st time customers have a sludge like that in them. Thats far too often to not be a typical problem to me.

and did they have a documented service history or can the customer swear on thier life that they had it serviced on the dot religiously every time??

another car common for this sort of thing is a V6 mitsi magna you know the late model shape everyone has (cos you can buy them for $2,000 now)... which is the shape after the one that is ALWAYS blowing smoke at you when your behind them at the lights..

i recently pulled the top end of the motor apart (rocker cover gaskets, put some mitsi 380 injectors in, few other seals etc etc) on my 2000 model Verada (3.5 V6), which has ticked over 200,700km's...

and u know what.. it didn't look a day over 50,000km's... every thing was a healthy light gold/brown colour..no sludge.. no gunge... cos i service it every 5000km's..

some of them i have seen look worse than that one pictured up there..

it all comes down to service history...
