Is it actually overheating or could the dash wiring be fubared?
Did you pull the fuses out and check them with a multimeter or just do a visual check? (Also check the new fuses as I have had one that didnt work)
ive been trying to fix up a ae82 to use as my daily but am having a niggling problem with the car overheating. Ive replaced all the hoses, thermostat etc etc(and most likely will have to replace the water pump to keep the mighty 4ac going) but now all of a sudden my temp gauge is no longer working (nor is the clock which previously was) i replaced a bunch of blown fuses but they where all to do with the radio. Can anyone point me in the direction of what could be wrong? i tried doing some searching but no luck and i cant get the repair manual to trouble shoot, from my local libary as someone else has borrowed it![]()

its overheating cause i think there is either a blockage somewhere or the water pump isnt working.. i mean the all the top hoses and the top of the radiator gets roasting hot after even 2 minutes of driving but if u start to drain the coolant its cold as.. annoying.
no i just did a visual check with the fuses.. and some where clearly blown. though which fuse is ment to be running to the dash for the clock and temp gauge if any?
Ahh much bugger.
Certainly does sound like the water isnt flowing.
Did you test the new thermostat as well to make sure it opens?
While your changing the water pump you may as well get the radiator cleaned out as well (if you havent already)
While the pump is off run the hose through and make sure theres no crap in the cooling system as well.

the car has been sitting for quite a while and after 300k's i dont think any part of the cooling system besides the radiator cap had been changed.. so im justing in the process of replacing most things. Just waiting for the water pump to arrive though looks like it will be a pain to replace.. damm fwd cars.
though need to get around to getting the radiator flushed.
Thanks for all the help so far guys but any other ideas why the temp gauge and clock decided to just stop working.. i just dont know how i can trouble shoot things like this. my abilities around anything that draws a current are limited at best.
Do any dash lights come on? (When you turn the key to ignition)
If so, its a fair bet that the dash has power.
To quickly test the gauge, take the sender wire off the temp sender and earth it. The needle should move towards the hot side.
if no go, then check to make sure the gauge (and clock) have power.
If they have power, then check to make sure the ground wires are connected properly.
If the clock still doesnt work it may be faulty.
if the temp gauge still doesn't work, check the wiring to the temp sender. Make sure its got continuity from the dash to the sender.
If after all that the temp gauge is not working, it may be faulty.
