Do slicks go bad?

Yes they should be okay, but as mentioned above they'll need a good burn-out to take the hard(er) skin off them. Slicks age basically from UV in sunlight and heat cycles.
Pure age will also make them harder but as you say if they've been kepy in the dark it probably won't be too bad at all.

Yeh sounds good. I'll do a burnout, and then dump the clutch leading upto the staging light to see if they are sticky yet. If not, i'll roll back and try again...

How do you normally judge when the burnout is enough?

With slicks, is it always the more heat the better, or is there such a thing as too much heat, like street tyres?

Yep you can overheat em! The Hoosier Australia guys get up us on a regular basis for doing half track warmup skids

They recon we are murdering the slicks and hurting our ET's...

Recommended proceedure is spin them till white smoke just starts to wif off them and definatly no dry hops on the way from the waterbox to the start line.

As for bogging down - just tune your slicks to your car...

Start at a set pressure, launch at good revs... if ya boggin down, add some pressure. i fits spinning hard, drop the pressure.

Yeh, i been told the same.

Small skid. Mostly cause the rubber gets hot, and it f*cks with the tire pressures. Which is very important...

It depends a lot on the compoud but with the really soft stuff you can get up to 90° no probs and the harder stuff I'd guess up to about 120° for short bursts is okay.

all we do on our racecar is hit the water and spin untill we grab traction, back up on top of the rubber lines and away we go... i doubt you have a back up girl or anything like that but try to aim as best as possible, what ever you do dont do a victory bray style burnout if you want to keep tryes for more than a meeting.

Maybe just me, but those two statements sound quite contradictory... Cos when I come off the water I've yet to find the car grab traction - I usually give up waiting for traction somewhere around the 1/2 track mark and back on up...

Although you are dead right about the tyres not lasting more than a meeting!

lol yeah i guess it could, im not good at explaining, we race a altererd with very large rear slicks. what i mean instead of grab traction is wheel speed and vehicle speed are the same therefore no smoke.
this gererally is about ten meters or so.
