Hi,
I made up a home made spring compressor, I know it is not like making a turbo manifold or anything but I thought someone else out there who does not want to pay a suspension shop one or two hundred $(to do their suspension) might get something out of it. Yes I am a cheap skate I will admit it![]()
I used:
2 x 45cm 1/2" threaded rod
4 x 1/2" nuts
4 x 1/2" washers
4 x 1/2" square tube pieces about 2cm long
4 x metal hooks
All I had to pay for was the 4 nuts $1.20 at Mitre 10.
And here is what all this crap looks like together. Hopefully I will get time to use them to put my kings in the corona in the next couple of weeks.

I'll give you $1.15 for it!!!
haha nice work, very simple!
where'd you get the threaded rods from though?

its booka rod same as they use for hanging cielings in offices etc!
just be careful with sheet hooks like that, some springs well bend them and go balistic!
sorry ment to add! but good diy spring comp!
looks good, and should fit into tighter spaces than normal spring compressors. i like that you bothered to paint the end bits.
my set cost me 30 bucks, and i have used them on 6 or so suspension changes so far.
i'd put some bigger washers under the nuts, and make sure you dont hook onto the very outside coil, or you will have trouble installing the springs. it will all become very clear when you start the job.
Thanks mick i appreciate itOriginally Posted by kingmick
I do my best to do everything safely but yeah with diy there is always some risk.
You can also get the threaded rod from hardware shops etc...

Ok I see what you are saying, would be a prick to get it stuck then have to undo it again.Originally Posted by shinybluesteel

Nicely done, I love itHaving just installed king lows in the rear of my car I now know what is required and I plan to write a guide on it soon with plenty of pics. Turns out I didn't even need springs clamps for the rear but I will be needing them for the front. And luckily I didn't just go buy some I was able to borrow a mates set

i remember the day when fencing wire made great spring compressors.....![]()
luckily i never had any let go on me and take a finger off or something sinister like that.
wishing i lived in nsw so i could give gun and drifty some decent competitions......
Thanks rob,
I am not to bothered about the rear but the fronts will be more disjointed as I will have to get some spacers made up after I get the shocks out of the struts to take up the difference. Should be able to get some made up at work but gotta wait till it is not so busy.

Nice effort, looks good. Just keep an eye on the rod though, we use a fair bit of 10mm all thread at work, and especially the cheap galv/ZP stuff isn't that strong. Just watch that it doesn't start to bow inwards as you put tension on them. But kudos none the less
*edit* Just an idea for Mk2 (if you ever make one) instead of using squaretube, get some bits of steel rod with a hole the right size drilled through them, with chamfered edges. They won't deflect at angles, and won't damage/bind up on the thread as much (if that proves to be a problem)
RM.
Even progressive tensioning on each one would be the key to not pushing it too hard.
If strength is an issue, jus make one more and go thirds on a spring...
Top job!
meh...
nice idea, just as i bought a similar setup, although the one i bought is much beefyer,
I hope mine holds up, it shouldOriginally Posted by merc-blue
Hey ace haha I only just saw your $1.15 offer but mate I will have to decline what I have created is a one off custom creation![]()
I will sell it for 99 cents with $20 post and handling![]()
That's if I don't break it first.

i would be worried about those hooks not holding up. the real ones are very thick in comparison
and maybe some thicker rodding
BUT
the idea is brilliant
good work buddy![]()
it may not seem like it but i appreciate all the help you guys give!
Punctuation is the difference between 'I helped my Uncle Jack off his horse' and 'I helped my uncle jack off his horse.'
just be verrrry careful if you are significantly compressing the spring..
what rate are your springs? sayy.. 4kg/mm ?
4cm is 160kg of force (80kg on each side) etc.... if you can hang your weight by them, you can (maybe) safely compress 4cm
if you are going to compress them a lot, do the fencing wire/many cable tie mod also![]()
good luck![]()

I have no idea how much I will need to compress them to get them in but I will know soon, if they start doing a david bowie on me then it is no drama I can just get some more rods.
I have a bit of wire in the shed so I can use use multiple backyard techniques at once, this is scary I am doing something constructive.![]()
I had like four colours to choose from silver, black, red and green. To paint the hooks. My wife asked me why I chose red, so I told her "because I wanted to" and she just laughed at me. I though red was a safe manly colour to choose.I should have told her so the blood stains would be less noticable.
Thanks Adam

i like the diy but i would use all high tensile components.
if you can source a bolt that is long enough to be used it means you can use a ratchet and a spanner instead of 2 spanners. which will decrease the time you are near it incase somethig goes wrong.
also when using the compressor oil the threads and the washers.
