Hi all, Does anyone know if a 7MGTE would fit in a Hiace or a 4x4 Hilux? Any model really...whatevers going cheap...
Thanks Heaps
Blake
4x4 hilux - 1G barely fits - 1JZ can be fitted with much work (e.g. W2A, remote cooler, etc) - so theoretically a 7M could... but it would be a tight fit.
Hiace? a van? you smoking crack or somthing?
You'ld have to tilt the motor over at a 45 degree angle just so the engine cover could shut.
Hiace is a carpenter's best friend...but they are gutless!
Is the height of a 7m a big issue in the hiace? I realise it'd be tight...even if u can assemble the short motor out of car and just then pop it in...im presuming the motor is installed/ removed from underneath?
maybe another v8 conversion sounds good....
I don't know about a 7M fitting in your Hi-ace but, any engine conversion is best done with the body lifted off the chassis.
If it feels good "DO IT" Unless it harms others.(or upsets the RTA)
Enjoy what you have To Day,cause you can't take it with you.

7m fits easily if you have a 22R motor originally. (in terms of engine mounts that is)
using 6me (or was it 5me? ill double check this) mounts, the original 22r cross member, with the rubbers flipped.
The w58/g52 gearbox series are interchangable as well
Length wise it is a tight fit, and u'll have to run without the thermo fan on the front, or move the radiator in front of the cross member.

walk thru guide for a 7mge swap, but should be same as the gte swap anyways.

edit: link to 1j hiace, although the pics have been removed here
Sorry Wilo, I've not been under any of the new Hiace's lately. So I could not say for sure.

The 1G into hilux is mostly a matter of mounts and routing of intercooler pipingOriginally Posted by WiLo
whereas a bigger engine (and a 7mgte - once you include all the induction-related hardware - is a lot of engine) is not going to fit under the hiace engine cover - so you're looking at significnat mods to the interior of the car. plus the driver is going to have two turbos just inches away from their arse.
obviously the 7mge (as lance suggests) is do-able but the engine bay is not going to be friendly place.
Blake: All my carpenter mates all have 4wd utes (tritons, luxes and cruisers). The sensible ones have dual-axle trailers with all the tools so A/H use of the truck doesn't require unloading of tools. Vans are for plumbers and tilers.
if you are going to do a hilux, use a post 89 one.. trust me the little bit of extra engine bay room will be worth ityou can probably pick up a 1g 4x4 hilux for a reasonable price.. there's usually a couple for sale..

this is my 2wd hilux, its the 84-88 shape.
id want one that came with a 22r....whatever model that is...
charles, i think you are right that the turbos not that gooda idea on a runabout hiace...my ass already gets hot in the 2005 model hiace i drive everyday..let alone glowing turbos even closer to me!
begs a question - would a 302 windsor fit?
blake
heat wise in a Van...as it causes driver a lot of discomfort if theres too much id lean towards an NA motor...do you need to remove chassis to put in/ pull out a motor?
no one dares to mention one of the easiest kit from swaps available...VS commodore motor into one....
That would be every Hilux from 85 to 99 I believe. There was a big change in the shape and engine bay size of the Hilux in 89\90 and this is what SL666 is referring to. Even though both Versions have the same 22r.Originally Posted by Robbos_Toyotas
i have done 1ggs into hiluxs and they all have different probs
the 1ggze fits easiest due to no rear turbo
but the superchager pulley comes very close to radiator
the 1ggte rear turbo comes close or hits brake booster
1uz in hilux is ok too but bit fiddly
i have also done a 1uz in a hiace van
very tight fit
heat is a small prob
so is drivers seat hittin on throttle body
when its down
u fit the 1uz from underneath but u cant bring it to hi up then u have prob of sump being low
the vs in a hilux is easy but not worth the money i think
the ecu needs security removed or a fake bcm fitted so theres an extra 300 or so bucks
i recently did a 1jz in a hilux and the guy fitted radiator in the rear tray so he had heaps of room for big cooler in front
so no mattter what way u go they all have small niggly probs
easiest and cheapest might be 1gg in a hilux as i have done 4 in past month
so at end of day u have ot see what money u have to spend
and how much work u can do yrself to save some money
another thing to watch out for is these kits u can buy that people sell them and say that they will bolt straight in
this can sometimes be bullshit
i have come across afew jobs where it would have been cheaper for me to do job myself
eg wiring loom pre wired? i still have to wire it to car and gauges so its cheaper in end for me to job myself
engine mounts and box bellhousing kits
they are not perfect sometimes and i always get probs with shit clutches
gbox not aligned to engine perfect due to poorly made bellhousing
the list can go on
youngy: nah, 89+ have the 22r, the 84-86 have the 3y and the 86-88 have the 4y.
Oh ok, My American book is different............I shouldn't of trusted it!
yeah didnt think 22rs came out that early lol!
I was going to ask this questionI'll have a spare 1G shortly, from my GZ & I was wondering what on earth I could put it in...
Old skool Hiace camper/tow car would be cool

the american luxes came out generally with each engine one generation ahead.
