Hi,
My car thinks either oxygen sensor or the wiring to oxygen sensor is not working properly. Is there any way to discover which it is - wiring or sensor? and also is it too bad to leave it temperarely if i need to replace it or get in there RIGHT NOW and do it. car seems to be running fine.
btw its a st162 - 3sge
thanks
my 4AGE has never run an oxy sensor (bought a new one, screwed it in but havent wired it up)
the only real reason you need one is to stop the exhaust leak, it will run quite safely without it hooked up, you will just get marginally worse fuel economy on the highway.
Actually you'll get much better economy with a good working o2 sensor connected.
The pimpmobile sans oxy sensor used to suck about 12 ltrs per 100km's and then about 8ltrs per 100km's once we connected the oxy sensor back.
If the wiring is stuffed then I assume you wouldn't get a reading between OX and GND on the diagnostic connector... if the sensor is a bit stuffed then you will get a reading, it just won't refresh very often.
Check the BGB in Lances signature for proper test procedures.
Note: The ST185 engine manual has the 5SFE, 3SGE and 3SGTE engine information,
Toobs i think hes saying that without it you get worse fuel economy on highways.Originally Posted by shinybluesteel
Main reason for having them is so on highway driving your computer can lean right out an return better economy.

I know... I was saying that what he says is incorrect... without an oxy sensor economy will be much more than marginally worse and will be worse at all road speeds.
hey i was right, i said marginally and it is marginal. seems it is a big margin though and not a small margin![]()
all i was trying to say is that it is in no way unsafe to not have an oxy senso hooked up. really should hook mine up one day, but headers are going on soon and i don't want to hook it up on them much.
oxygen sensor is good.
why waste fuel if you don't need to?
as for original question, unhook the O2 sensor (how many wires? just one?) and connect multimeter between the signal wire at the O2, and the O2 pin on the loom where it plugs into the ECU...
to check sensor, connect multimeter between O2 pin at ECU,(positive) and put negative to ground, and set multi so it can read 0-1V... if, when you are cruising, the voltage doesn't go up and down, then maybe there is prb with O2 sensor
