Hey Guys,
Mate with a MK4 supra is doing a 2JZ-GTE swap, upgrading from a 2JZ-GE.
Cant really afford 6speed getrag and diff from a twin turbo model yet.
Should be able to afford it by March at the latest.
Current diff is an A01B Torsen LSD.
Questions:
- On stock 2JZ-GTE power day to day and the odd track session, how does the W58 fare?
>> Experiences from people who have done this please.
- Can anyone recommend a suitable and affordable upgrade for the clutch and/or pressure plate.

we had one in my mates 2jz/gt35 180sx the guy before him used it as a drift car, he supposedly broke the box once but was able to strip it down and repair. we used the car at one track day (not drifting) with full slicks, and then the odd drive around the streets. after about 2-3months of street use he gave it a squirt in third and it sheared the input shaft.
if its the original w58 from the mk4 it might be ok as chances are it hasent done 300,000km, stock power it should last. just avoid the clutch dumps in the big heavy supra.
ps. i think you may have posted in the wrong spot

How about a R154?
Stronger than a W58, and not as expensive as the getrag 6.

We dont have an R154.
W58 is sitting there, working fine.
Its the one that was already in his MK4 Supra.
Stuie, my mate, wants to go 6speed off the bat, do it once and do it right if theres to be a gearbox conversion.
The current W58 allows him to shakedown the 2JZ-GTE he has bought,
while he is saving for the uprated box, diff and shafts.
This is the current thinking.
Otherwise his car would be off the road for 3-4 months.
Hence the enquiry as to how long a W58 on a 2JZ-GTE will last.
An owner with the conversion on driftworks says 30k miles.
Any other guys here with some experiences?
mines holding up but its probably only done 10km so far haha. ask me again mid january when ive done a few more![]()
My suggestion would be to get a soft clutch - make the clutch the weakpoint.

Paging Norbie...
Yeah I have a bit of experience with this. I think this is gearbox number three, minus the teeth on the layshaft gear:
In all I broke four W5x boxes, including an actual JZA80 box - and that's in a MkII Supra which is a fair bit lighter than a MkIV. Note I was very gentle on the transmission after the first one broke (no racing, clutch dumps, burnouts etc) but it didn't seem to make much difference. IMO it's a combination of the huge torque of the 2JZ and the grabby clutch I was using to prevent slippage - it just puts more stress on the W5x than it was designed to handle.
Wilbo's suggestion isn't a bad idea, with a soft clutch the transmission will have a better chance, but any more than stock boost and you're likely to experience clutch slip. That was my experience anyway, YMMV.
