Hi guys,
Recently the charge light came up on my dash, i checked it out and the charge wire had come off the back of the alternator and melted a bit, i cut the wire back a bit and put a new terminal on but the dash light still stayed on.
After having starting issues the mechanic at my work had a look and found the alternator was overcharging the battery then discharging it and said the internal regulator was gone and i needed a new one, i went all out and bought a new alternator on the weekend installed it but the damn dash light is still on.
Any ideas ?
This also means i have a spare alternator, anybody need one ?
Cheers Jimmy

Kenny, have you still got a standard alternator? Because the standard one doesn't use an internal regulator... the regulator is the big box on the passenger inner guard of the engine bay.
Oh, and if you've upgraded to a later model internally regulater alternator, then the wiring is simple to check. Voltage sense (12V) on one pin, ignition on another, and the charge light on the 3rd.
The charge light in the dash should have ignition on one side, and it's grounded through the alternator on the other.
see my guide in the FAQ.
...... butt scratcher?!
OK, so the dude at repco that sold me the alternator told me that it was internally regulated, but after doing some research i found out that its not...
I checked out the wiring today & found the charge sense wire ( white ) had melted, i replaced all the wires but the charge light is still on...
Does this mean the regulator is dead, the fuse in there is fine but i can kinda smell that electrical burning smell coming from it...

Oh yeh i also checked the battery voltage, it was around 14 when off, and it got up to 17 at one stage when it was running, thats bad, thats probably why my headlights blew yesterday...

If you disconnect the alternator completely does the light go off?
Dood, if there was an internallly regulated alternator on there and now its replaced with an externally regulated alternaotr, do you have an external regulator hooked up to it as well??

Disconnect the charge wire or all the wires off it ?
The new alternator is the exact same as the old one, there both externally regulated. The regulator is hooked up, thats where the burnt wire was & also where the burning smell is coming from i think...

disconnect the charge wire dood, the light should go out, if it doesnt then it means that wire is shorted somewhere in the harness.
Ohhh okay, burning smelll from electronics is not good...
see what happens after the charge light is fixed. but you may need a new reg as well...

it shouldnt be shorting out anywhere i checked all that today, ill check tomorrow after i go riding.
I think the regulator is cooked...
Cheers man

Yeah dood, check it tomorrow if the light goes out then it would likely mean the reg is buggered.

just confirming the charge wire is the bigger wire going straight to the battery, right...
I replaced that wire today...

umm no.
Thats the alternator output.
The charge wire is only a small wire. Normally Yellow-White. It goes inside the car and connects to the charge lamp.

Hi,

I noticed not all images were coming out, but not sure if that's me or a more serious problem with the image hosting service.

Disconnect the wiring to the regulator (which should disconnect the lamp wire) and then make sure the charge light doesnt come on. This is to make sure the wire itself isn't shorted to chassis somewhere.
If all checks out then you most likely do have a buggered reg.

I disconnected that wire & the charge light went out, it was still illuminated a little bit but its been like that for a while, my regulator must be busted, can you buy a new one or do i need to put an add up...
Thanks again mate... + rep

New ones are available. RA40 units also fit, but you need to get some new crimp ends and change over the plug. KE30 rolla ones also fit.

Call up Repco or any auto Parts store and tell them what you need. failing that go to an auto eleccy and say, i need a new one of these (take it into him) they may have one on shelf or will be able to get you one by the end of the day.
Good luck.
