Hey team rolla
ok here goes the question, nice and easy one
Just bought myself, a K&n drop in filter and am planning on using the stock airbox and intake setup as apparently it provides good cold air from the from the bonnet.
Anyway been thinking of doing some airbox mods and first step was to remove the resonators... first one would be the one near where the air enters the engine, there is this large empty plastic box attached to the pipe, i wanted to know if i remove this will this in any way be bad for the engine? and if not, will there ba any marginal performance gains or sound gains?
and would anyone know any good ideas on how to cover the hole from where the resonator sits? i hears a few sheets of alfoil and some plastic ties? is this prob the easiest way?
cheers
The resonators are there to cancel out harmonic noise in the intake tract. Any power gains that you'll get from removing them will be marginal at best, non-existant at semi-worse, and actually negative at worst. But, if you're intent on removing the one next to the throttle body, try seeing if there's a pipe cap that's the right size.
If you're going to keep the stock airbox and use a K&N, I suggest not using the standard snorkel as it's not the best. If you want a proper CAI setup, remove the battery and the intake snorkel and you'll see that there's a resonator under the front guard (ie between the wheel and the front bumper, if you pull the splashguard up you'll see it). Remove that resonator, and the pipework to the airbox, and run your own pipe down through that hole to a little scoop (just wedging the splashguard open is an option). I've done basically the same thing, except I removed the airbox, ran a length of alloy pipe from the TB to the guard with a pod filter on the end, as below

hey cheers for the heads up! nice setup therejust wanted to ask ya why your still keeping that other resonator there near the engine air inlet? thats the one i was thinking of removing once i receive the k&N?
because generally, as well as reducing annoying noise, they can increase torque at certain points along the curve..
ie, removing it is detrimental, on an otherwise stock engine..

Comparing my two dyno charts from before and after the intake was installed, the curve has a couple of little flat-spots with the intake, but overall power is higher.

Hey Hiro
Just wanted to ask you how on earth you managed to remove that resonator that sits under neath the chasis, i took out the battery and was hoping i could just unplug it form the main pipe, but had no luck...how did you go about this, also if removing it takes too difficult, do you think there is a way to stop the airflow from entering the resontor by sticking a piece of thick card or a plastic disk between where the resonator pipe is connected to the main inlet pipe?
cheers!
It's bolted to the guard underneath. Take off the splashguard and look up, you should see how it goes. Once you take the snorkel and intake piping out (up to the airbox, and the bolt/s holding the resonator to the guard from underneath, it should just drop out.Originally Posted by petro

ah ok, so I have to work from underneath the car.... what does the splash guard look like exactly, is it hard to miss?
so you would not recommend to slide in a piece of plastic between the opening of the resonator (as in where the main air pipes connects to the resonator) and the main air pipes?
The splashguard is the big black flat piece of plastic under the front of the engine bay (two or three pieces, can't remember), you can't it. It's bolted on to the guard and the front bumper in a few places, you don't need to take it out fully (as it goes all the way up the wheel-arch as well), just enough to move it out of the way to get to the resonator.
And if you're planning on keeping the stock airfilter and air box, then don't worry about blocking off that hole, if you space the splashguard out a bit it can act as a reasonable cold air intake, won't be any problem keeping it open even with the snorkel, doesn't matter as it is before the air filter and the throttle body.

That shows you where the bolt holding the resonator on is, can't remember if you undo it from underneath or within the engine bay, but should be easy to work out.

Hi Hiro,
cheers for the links, i know it may be a pain but would you pls be able to take a pic of the underneath of the car where the splash guards are screwed in and just highlight the screws that need to be undone do that there is enough room for me to sneak in and remove the resonator? a mate it going to let me use his pit ramp thing that raises the front of the car up a bit so i want to make sure i get it right...
thanks in advance!
Just stick your head under there and undo anything that connects the big black plastic sheet thingy to anything else. You're not going to touch anything important, just remember where each one goes (some of them are different depending on what they screw in to), take photos as you're pulling it apart to make sure, and if worst comes to worst just pull the whole splashguard off. It's incredibly simple. Once you get a couple of screws out, start pulling the spashguard away and where it doesn't move, that's where you need to undo more screws. Just keep doing that until you have enough room.Originally Posted by petro
