gearbox sweeech?

Hey guys

I'm new to the forum - but am not new to Toyota

I have a '76 RA23.

I just have a quick question regarding the reverse light sensor...

I have just bought the car and have found.... the reverse lights don't work.... I took it to get a roadworthy (before I knew they didn’t work) and the mechanic said he could not even find the wiring for the switch....

So what’s the deal? Is it an internal switch? Where is it? How does it operate... and where does the wiring come from..... I have an 18rc in it (cringe).

Second question is ... I have the 18rc which the last owner swapped in.... how do I identify the engine for getting parts etc...? How do I find the year?

Auto or manual?

I'm not sure about the auto's of that vintage, but the manuals should have a mechanical switch on the side of the gearbox for the reverse light.

The switch on the side of the gearbox switches +12V to the reverse lights.

One end of the reverse lights is constantly grounded, the other end connects to the switched +12V that comes from the reverse light switch.

And of course check the fuses and the bulbs.

Sorry, why didn't i specify a trans. Its a manual...

Is it at the top of the gearbox... or just on the sides....

Does it have anything to do with a two pronged 'thing' sticking out of the gearbox...

I'll let someone that actually has a W40/W50 chime in and answer that one!

I've never actually had any experience with a W40/W50 first hand to be honest (besides driving them )

Also the pins near the shifter are spring loaded and make the shifter return to the neutral position, so it isn't them

Yes the 2 pronged doover on the left facing down is the revese light switch . Id be suprised if its buggered , most likely am fuse or both globes.

One last question....

As it is a different engine than it originally had.... there is no wiring to the switch?.... where does the wiring come from? or is it tucked away so that neither me or the mechanic could find it.... (mechanic said there wasnt a reverse light switch there?)

The wiring takes a funny route. It crosses over the top of the bellhousing and heads across near the steering box and then up under the brake booster in the loom that enters the panel at the top of the corner of the engine bay I think.

Check the top bolts of the bellhousing where it bolts to the engine block. The cable should be secured to one of these bolts with a clip.

At the risk of sounding stupid - How does the switch work... because - regarding the two pin 'majjig' ... i dont see any switch block or contacts or ... anything?

I have never unscrewed the switch from a gearbox but at a guess I would say it is just a push button type switch (most likely similar concept as brake pedal switch) that is just activated by a selector fork or something when the gearbox is in reverse.

hook up ur 2 reverse light wires to it, just use female bullet terminals. the 2 pins are the contacts
