    Default Transmission tunnel of FWD

Please excuse me if this seems like a stupid question, but why do some purely FWD cars have a transmission tunnel running all the way to rear of the car?

Is this because the floor layout has been used on another model?
In my case I'm talking about an AE92 in particular. I'm just curious.

    Thanks.

    AE92 also came as a 4WD.
the centre hump is likely for strength and stiffness of the shell.. if it was a flat floor, it would be fairly floppy.

there are some 4WD AE9X Wagons/Sedans so the floorpans could be universal as u said for all.

In the case of the AE92 it was partly due to some 4WD models, however it it's pretty shallow and just houses the exhaust on FWD models. All the FWDs I've seen have some form of tunnel, purpose being twofold, to house the exhaust and (as OC said) for body stiffness.

    Thanks thats very interesting.

He He, I don't suppose a 4WD conversion would be very cheap/easy or worthwhile woud it.

There is someone on these forums with an AE95 sedan.

I was looking at doing a 4wd conversion on my last Caldina, the tunnel was the same for FWD & AWD models, but the rear chassis had different mounting points.

If you can get hold of a 4wd rear cut for your model, it may be doable, but you'd have to check whether the tunnel height is enough.
