    Default MA70 to 1jz conversion..NSW Legalities?

    Crossposted on supraforums..no love there

Hey guys, my gf wants to take her currently auto 1989 MA70 GT Limited turbo widebody drifting (ie we need a manual, some power + some reliability).

Seeing as the hg has already popped once while hooning around winton and it was more of a patch up job than a propper fix, we're thinking a JZA70 manual half cut is the way to go.

Just curious as to whether or not this conversion needs an engineers cert? Can we just do the swap, then head into the RTA and get the engine number changed? Would the 3rd party insurance provider need to be notified?

Im asking as i have only done this conversion in my cressida...and it being a cressida meant i could get away with it for about 4 years without notifying anyone, even when i was on my Ps!

    Thanks in advance,
    Troy

Should be able to do it, with only changing the engine number (IE Blueslip required)
As it was an option from that model, and you're just fitting standard equipment...

in NSW, if the car was never available with that engine, in australia, then you need to have it engineered.

if ti was an option in Oz, and you swap over evertyhing that goes with that option, you might be able toget away with owner certified

According to the RTA, it's if it's optional from the manuafacturer.
AND you only need to engineer the car if engine displacement is greater then 15% of largest available engine (He's going smaller, no issue) unless the new engine is modified.
If it retains all factory gear, and is less then15% increase in displacement, then it's owner certifiable.

optional from manufacturer means optional in AUS, otherwise it is not offered as an option.

ie, 4AG needs to be engineered in AE86, bu tnot in AE82.

i was also assuming that he is talking abotu turbo... that adds to the capacity, and is unlikely to get the nid..

but call engineer and find out for sure.. and call RTA tech line (not normal line).. get it in writing

edit: the VSI doesn't say it http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registrati...s_nov_2007.pdf

but the COPfLVM says it iirc

But the OP is already using a turbo 7M, so it'll still be a decrease in capacity (from 3.0L turbo to 2.5L turbo)

I did this conversion myself to an NA 88 or 89 MA70 in NSW a few years back and the RTA only required a Blue Slip report for the engine number change.

JZA70 was never sold locally in Australia at time of manufacture, only in Japan.

I'd e-mail/call the RTA tech guys - they've been really helpful/correct for me in the past, whereas each engineer will tend to have a different opinion on what is ok

Tech guys at the RTA said it would need to be engineered when I called them up when I did my conversion, I just ended up getting a blue slip with the engine number change and it was fine.

"fine" approved by engineer/blue slip place does not mean legal... although I'm sure a good argument could be made for the "manufacturer" thing appling to everywhere in the world, not Aus (since it doesn't specify in that doc).

IE: the big brakes on my supra didn't need to be approved because they were a manufacturer option.... not in australia, but an option. engineer, RTA and blue slip place were all in agreeance on that.

Im getting an engineers cert anyway for everything else, and the cars not going anywhere, so im not going to need to argue my point luckily

The reason i never called an engineer first is that A:They probably wont like giving out info for free to someone they've never had dealings with/taken money from and Bretty sure they'll tell me it needs to be engineered so that they can snatch some coin from me.

Thanks heaps for the info guys, helps a lot. I think we'll go ahead with it and worry about any hurdles if any as they come. From the experiences on here, i doubt there will be any!

Do the RTA Ask you for a receipt of purchase for the engine?

    yup....

but if you bought the engine from a family member..... (unless it actually is stolen), then it is easy to geta new receipt...

Straight from the NCOP's - Although whether NSW is using the NCOP's yet is dubious.
    http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa...s_3Feb2006.pdf

Based on this there is no certification required, assuming section 4.1 is complied with.

that depends if RTA mean it is an option WITHIN aus or OUTSIDE aus.

my reading is that it is for engines optioned LOCALLY only, as they have already passed applicable ADR's..

ie, if you put a V8 in your V6 crumpledoor.... since the V8 was an option locally, and all the associated bits are already certified as such..

when you start fitting motors that have never passed aussie emissions, and their associated parts (brakes etc) never passed ADR's....

ie, if a 1J or 2J was sold locally (ie the JZA70) then it is apples (like AE82 and 4AGE)

The JZA70 has been complied and approved locally (ie, it meets all relevant ADR's), so based on that it would apply.
