I'm in the middle of cleaning bits prior to starting my 100kw rebuild
All the gear is back and honed and nice and clean
Just took my oil pump apart to get the gasket off it and noticed the relief valve thing
Got the circlip pliers out to find a spring, a hat and a little enclosure it sits in with what looks to be a piston at the top with a relief valve or two in it
My question is, does the piston move up and down the bore as it appears stuck firm. I'm soaking it in some INOX to see if it will free it up as its gummed up, but don't quite understand how this relief valve thing works.
Anyone know for certain?

ok so it appears it should at least come out.
i can't seem to remove mine (even after a soak in INOX)
any thoughts on how to get this little dude out?

I know nothing about 4AGE oil pumps but have 1 bigport pump that works well, If it will fit its yours free.
pump diagram
valve 15131 should move down to compress the spring to relieve pressure?

des. thanks - they appear different in the drive gears.
stu - i found that same diag lastnight. concur - the piston should move up and down.
now to unstick mine and get it out. more inox soaking FTW
thanks guys

they are only about 200 bucks brand spanking from toyota iirc.
not worth recycling an old one in a fresh engine.
if the gears are ok, then may as well reuse it....
can you get somthing into the port to try and lever the piston up and unstuck?
can you get an airline onto it? (and somethign to catch when it pops out at high velocity)

true the clearance on the rotors can be just fine but doesnt mean that they arnt potentially about to crack.
the TRD oil pump (now discontinued) didnt flow any more oil or higher pressure it just had stronger rotors to cope with high rpm use so failure of the rotors is a known issue. for a new engine youve just spent countless dollars building a new pump seems like good insurance
oh and if you pop it out with compressed air best thing to have it shoot into is a nice soft piece of wood to prevent firstly it flying across the room but also to prevent damage to the piston. much like when you disassemble brake calipers.
oooh yeah
air pressure
never thought of that
more heads are better than one
the innards of it look ok actually, so yeah, into a piece of wood it goes
time not on my side a great deal, off to sydaney next week (again)

from this pic it looks like at worst you could drill a small hole in the plunger to try and get it free... it shouldn't affect the operation as the end is what is pushed by the oil...

If it's a hollow one, a tap or wood dowel can be jammed into it.
Inerita should get it out, by hitting the housing in a direction against the way it needs to move out, hitting toward its seat, in the direction of its travel, should back it out if it isn't too bad or smegma'd up.
After cleaning up the valve & bore, it should slide freely and drop out of the bore on its own, with maybe thin lube & a little shake.
i'll try air pressure first and see how we go
i've tried the gentle tap method too to no avail
not keen on drilling a hole in it, but good suggestion

have you removed the retainer (part #15135 from diagram). I had some problems getting mine apart to clean and found that i left the retainer in there, once removed it all came tumbling out.
if its jammed, its jammed, you can find new pumps all over the net from $5 and up.
edit: nevermind, i've been speed reading too much lately gotta slow it down.

air pressure for the win
i rigged up some fuel hose to my air compressor air gun and pumped air gently into the main hole blocking the other holes with my fingers and she popped out no problem
getting the thing back in and cleaned - no probs
getting the circlip back on - 1 hour later no probs either :|
