Hi
I recently got a Defect Notice on my Sprinter (4AGE) for Emission Controls and for all modifications to be inspected.
1. What will be checked and what does a Sprinter need to pass emission controls?
2. I have a 2.5" straight through with a cannon and I dont have a cat or evap canister, are these needed?
3. I have modified the suspension (8kg/mm front 6kg/mm rear) would this pass inspection?
Any other useful information...
Thanks

I've never had to clear a defect on the AE86, but I did get the engine swap blue slipped which I assume would be similar.
I had to have a cat, factory air box, factory ecu, all vac lines hooked up, charcole canister, unleaded fuel neck.
I think that was bout it.. Not sure on the springs sorry.. I got knocked back once on a blue slip because I had a whiteline swaybar.. So I wouldn't be suprised if they could knock you back for springs.

haha emisions, you will need a cat and charcoal canister,
charcoal canister can be dodged to make it look like its hooked up,....wrap a few vacuum hoses around near the mani,
depends on how strict they are, but you WILL NEED A CAT atleast
Cat and charcoal canister for sure.
If they suspect the car isn't running the factory ecu, or they suspect the internals have mods, they may ask for an emissions test (big $$ at the moment I think).
As for the suspension, the depends on the guy doing the test drive.
If its too stiff for his liking, he'll fail it.
4AGE needs a CAT. The emissions sticker for an Aust 4AGE in an AE82 (which I have put on my AE86) says
"exhaust emission control system - EFI + O2S + TWC"
Cool thinks I, twin cam is part of the emissions system, they must be so efficient!
Eventually I discover that TWC actually stands for "three way catalyst system"
EFI and O2S are however self explanatory.
I have heard that Toyota no longer sell the emissions stickers via spares, but cannot confirm this is definitely so.
One would think a 4age would have better emission stats than a 4ac but 306deg cams might change that for the worse ?
You will definitely need a Cat and a charcoal canister (evap canister). Lowered springs are generally fine so long as the ride height fully loaded gives a minimum clearance of 10cm for everything (diff centre, exhaust etc etc). As for the factory air box, ecu etc, you dont need them if you can prove (by means of an emissions test which could be costly) that the aftermarket parts used allow the engine to run with the same or less emissions as a factory system.

the car is an 85 model, If the engine were also pre 86 you may get by without a cat , but if the engine has been sourced locally it is definately post 86 so cat and unleaded fuel neck needed.
I have heard of people getting away with just an unleaded fuel only sticker on the fuel door... but that one is subjective and would be up to the signatory engineer who approves your mods.

I don't know if anybody has noticed but you cannot buy leaded fuel any more so why the different filler or "unleaded only sticker"? Are the authorities living in the past?
Jealousy is a curse
I still dont understand why people remove carbon cannisters ..... Both the last couple of cars i have bought had them removed, Nothing beats strong petrol fumes ...![]()

You can buy leaded petrol, you just need a logbook for it.Originally Posted by madmont

err.. so dumb people don't accidentally fill with diesel?Originally Posted by madmont

As for diesel, the new diesel fuel nozzles coming in for small vehicles are exactly the same size as unleaded, so size of filler want fix that problem. The filler neck size is a state by state thing nowadays, some insist but most are enlightened enough to know it doesn't make a difference anymore, just depends on your registration Authority.

I'm pretty sure when my Aristo came in last year that it needed no modification on the fuel, the law had changed or something due to the fact that leaded is no longer "easily" available ( as in, pick the wrong handle on the pump easily)
Well my 86 went over the pits today and the examination report was alot nicer than I expected:
* indicator to cancel out
* horn to operate (haven't connected the wire to my nardi)
* windscreen washer hose needs connecting
* repair ripped seat
* seatbelt to retract
* movement in steering (?? all the bushes etc are brand new ??)
* diff leak needs rectifying (its a locker!!)
* rectify running performance on fuel line (???)
* fit immobiliser
thats it.
I'll have to see the examiner people tomorrow to clarify some stuff but overall not too bad I think.

Add to the defect list that your sig needs to be 5 lines
Check the bushes inside your rack, they may be starting to crumble. Quite a cheap part, not too hard to install, big PITA is that you need to pull out the rack to do it though
I would be asking for further clarification on the fuel line issue. Oh, and next time you take it to them, pull your rotor button out, and tell them thats your immobiliser![]()

I got them to clarify the fuel line issue - they actually meant that the clutch wasn't smooth enough, which isn't surprising since its a drift clutch. I told them it is a "heavy duty clutch": and they said that to "just try and get it to run a bit smoother". Not sure what to do about that other than put in a "normal" clutch for him or something, or maybe a lighter flywheel???...
