Default 4AGE carbed dizzy - EPC request

Over the weekend I had a quick look at a carbed 4AGE. It ran what looked to be a factory dizzy that had mechanical and vacuum advance and electronic points. And seemed to bolt to the head perfectly.

The only identtifying mark I could find was a part number on the dizzy cap. It was 029120-0570. Is there anyone who could cross reference this in the EPC? I'm very curious if it was a factory dizzy, and if so then out of what.

    Thanks

That number doesn't work in EPC but did the dizzy look like this?

No, not like that. It didn't have an inbuilt coil. It just looked like a normal round dizzy cap. It could well have been non-Toyota I suppose.

Thanks for looking it up though. Is that dizzy you've shown an option for this setup?

If you google the part number, it comes up as

    Distributor cap daihatsu 029120-0570

That should point you in the general direction.

And now I'm trying to work out why I didn't do that in the first place...

    Thanks Parrot.

    Love that google.

And it would be a four cylinder so perhaps easier to narrow down.

    Use the standard dizzy,

Buy the following MSD ignition control parts.

PN 8981 - programmable timing control $475 (Superplus parts - aus.)
    - Fully programmable ignition curve (initial timing, advance point, slope of advance)
    - High speed retard function (for nitrous etc) - adjustable via plug in modules.

    PN 6420 - 6AL control unit $395 (ebay - america)
    - Required to run the timing control above.
    - Soft touch rev limit - adjustable via plug in modules.
    - Increased spark voltage and capacity
    - Triple spark under 3000rpm, for 20deg. duration

    Both CARB approved.

allows you to completely remove the 4age ECU system.

Double the price of a good dizzy setup... but no screwing around, just hook it all up and give it a run on the dyno for fine tuning.

    blardy eck
if you want an old style dizzy, go to scorcher ignition in nunawading, tell them what advance curve you want and you're done.
last quote i had was $450 all told.

neither option really stacks up price wise i dont think.

japs often used a prticular modified 4k (7k?) one. the cap looks the same(as stock rwd 4age) but they use some type of adaptor plate between the dizzy and head.

www.delta-digital.com.au (i think) is an ozzy company making an decent (looking) ignition only ecu if that helps anyone. its what i came up with as the best solution when considering going down that route.

anyway this is all o.t, but im definately going to check back here to see what you come up with.

    Update*

Ran the car with just the 6AL hooked up, the timing computer is in place but no timing modifications are set.

With static 20 degrees advance, the car idles suprisingly well, triple spark helps A LOT.

Yet to run it over the dyno, but looking at very good power once the timing is set and the curve is worked out.

Gents, I fully understand there are other options to do it better electronically, however this engine I want to build with carbs and with a dizzy. I have never worked with them before and want to learn.

The dizzy I saw looked like a great fit, had vac and mechanical advance and electronic points. Basically exactly what I am wanting. I'm also playing with a 3k dizzy but that needs an adaptor that I CBFed making right now.

So I was just trying to chase up an ID on that Daihatsu dizzy. In any case, the Daihatsu forums aren't much help either.

I have been thinking about this issue as it seems to be comming up more and more often. I had a look at a 3A dizzy i have and i would speculate you could get it to work. You would need to replace the gear with a 4A one but the dizzy does have mechanical advance and there is no ignitor built in. This is just a thought as I need my dizzy for my 3A and am unwilling to start modifying it. Anyone outhere who knows if this can be confirmed or denied? Not wanting to send anyone astray, but it does look like it should work.....

    Key word: *CBFed*

You'll put in a LOT of work to sort out the drive gears alone if you can't find something that suits perfectly without modifications. Performance wise, mechanical (or vacuum) advance cannot compete with an electronically programmable curve.

I reaserched the crap out of this, the moment I found a solution that did not involve distributor modifications, I jumped at it. The additional features of these electronics control units makes them well worth the purchase.

I'm simply trying to stress the performance value's here...
Sure the dizzy will give you advance, but won't be quite as versatile as an electronic control unit.

Why not try a Daihatsu dealer, or a workshop that deals with them regularly? Mind you that might be hard as I don't believe they are sold in Aus any more?

My choice would be a Megajolt setup, cheap and looks like it would be reasonably easy to get at least a base setup sorted. Would be ideal if you can use the pulse wheel from the original 4AG distributor.

....just in the shed found a 4KE dizzy.....compared it to an 86kw/100kw and, if you spaced the dizzy out about 10mm *maybe* and put the gear from the 4AGE dizzy on i reckon you'd have a winner...

    Hen,

I think Grega has the right answer, I was not sure if it was a 4A or 4K dizzy. The setup you want is the same deal I have on my 100kw fitted with 45 webers, it will need a spacer to increase distance from head as 4k shaft is longer and also to fatten the shaft as it is narrower than the 4age dizzy shaft.

I'll ask the guy who built my dizzy about the specs and PM you.

    Cheers Chris
