Brake options for hilux diff?

Hi all. I am wondering what brakes you have fitted to a hilux diff?
I would like to run 4x114.3 stud pattern, but it would also be nice if i could fit 13" rims over them.
Has anyone fitted a smaller drum? e.g. early corolla, liteace or something thats not as massive as the standard hilux drums?
What about r31 disc brakes, is 14" the smallest rim you'd fit over them?

Youngy, that upgrade will give 5*114.3 stud, and I dont think 13" rims will fit over them (I think 14s would struggle, they are pretty massive)

Rotorace... The brake package will need to be suited to what you want to do with the car. What front brakes do you have?? What are you using the car for?? If its just something like drag racing, then braking isnt important (have 400m to stop) so you should be able to modify some RA40 drums (will fit in 4*114.3 13" rims), just need to check the distance from the axle face to the side of the housing. This will require custom fitting though.

If you are going for track type use or daily driving, go for larger rims, they will improve handling by lowering the profile of tyres required. Then the MA70 brakes Youngy pointed out could be used (need to re-drill) and you can use bigger brakes on the front too.

Ok, so the car will be mainly street, i would like to run it t the drags too.Thats where the
13" rims come in.
But having said that, theres no drag strip in SA, so i'd like to chuck a lap or two at malalla...

I figure ill set it up for street at this stage, then if a particular fom of motorsport takes my fancy i'll modify it to suit.
The car (ke20) is fitted with 266mm (i think) magna rotors and just early commo calipers.
Now what do you guys reckon?
Everything im talking about is a compromise of some sort, so maybe i'll have to compromise:
stud pattern? i could run 4x110.
Wheel choice? r31 rear brakes, 14" rims min.
Brake performance? fit drum brakes of a usable size.
I don't know what to do. I'd just fit drums, but it seems silly to do more work to fit drums..
I did have a look at fitting the ke20 drums, but the hilux has a large semi-floating bearing hub assembly which would make it difficult.

On the street the best safety feature you can have is good brakes. So you will need to look at how powerful your brakes are at the front, and match the rears. The little magna rotors with commo callipers will probably be quite well matched to Celica sized drums, or RT142 avante rear disks. But I dont know how easy they will be to match to the Hilux diff.

What engine/power and torque output do you have that requires the heavy hilux diff?? Why cant you put a smaller F series diff in?? Or even a T series if you have a K series motor??

I have just recently made up some simple caliper brackets to fit Nissan R31 skyline calipers to a hilux G-series diff. Keeping the disks 4 stud im using rt142 avante disks. I found this to be the easiest and simpliest way to go about converting to disks. The R31 calipers double as a handbrake as well so the only other mod needed is a custom handbrake cable.

be warned, disk handbrakes are renowned for sticking. The RT142 drum handbrake is a much better setup. If those disks fit over, then it would be a good setup for you to match the front brakes you have. Just make sure you have a master cylinder that will do disk rear brakes.

tried fitting the both live axle and IRS rt142 rear corona brakes to G-series diff. IRS setup is very sililar to the popular MA70 upgrade but the backing plate is just too small to machine out to suit the large G-series bearing carrier. Same sort to story with the Live axle brakes which are the same as commodore setup except the corona ones use an alloy backing plate. You need a 20mm spacer to suit between the backing plate and the bearing retainer but you still run into issues with the handbrake lever fouling to the large g-series bearing retainer.

Don't know whether this will help you or not but i have heard of ppl fitting older subaru front callipers to the rear of 4x4 hilux's. The main reasoning to have a useable hanbrake. 4x4 hilux drum brakes won't work after they have been in mud and water.

The car will be powered by a rotary.
I didnt really want to use something with an internal handbrake drum because it makes the outside diameter of the rotor huge. I am trying for a small as possible basically.
I was thinking along the lines of pubes idea as the rotors are smallish and the caliper is also your handbrake.

if the calipers are in good nick or rebuilt, there wont be a problem with them sticking. its only when they get old, and never get lubed/ brake fluid flushed is when they start to give problems.

i agree with guys that said try to setup a system with internal drum handbrakes, they do seem to work better, however they make the conversion a little harder. even with the larger diameter of the drum type rotor, that shouldnt cause clearance problems with rims. your main concern is the inner diameter/offet of the wheels, and the outer edge of the braske caliper.

as for drums, they can take a bit of work + more maintenance, but they CAN be made to work quite well in mild circuit applications. hilux rear drums in my own experience have been quite good!

The rear calipers from the r31 im pretty sure are girlock items. They are basically the same as all rear brakes used on comodores, falcons, toyotas but the r31 model has the addition of the integrual handbrake.

you may be able to do it if you found a smaller diameter rotor with similar pad height and disc thickness to an R31 rear rotor, then make your own caliper mount to suit

edit: if my memory serves me correctly R31 rear rotors are finned? you may be able to shave a bit off some of the fins for clearance.. dodgey way to do it though

its been a while since i looked at some but from memory they do have cooling fins, where as the bluebird calipers and corona calipers didnt.

today i tried fitting ke55 13" rims over RT142? corona rear disc brakes and they hit the caliper bigtime

Im fairly certain you could squeeze 13s onto the r31 setup. To put things in comparison, the st141 setup has a 280mm disk, the r31s are only 260mm. It will come down to the actual rim as to whether it will fit or not but i have a mate that has 13" superlites that will fit.

Im going to have a look at fitting liteace drums as they run a semi-floating style bearing like the hilux.
The bolt spacing is slightly different, but i reckon i'll get them to fit.
If they don't you'll all know, i'll be back on here harrassing you in no-time.
