    Default 3sgte Ecu's

Ive got an AW11 with a GEN1 3SGTE in it. I am looking to get a MINES ecu but the only I can find is for the 90 SW20 MR2 with a GEN2 3SGTE. My question is are these interchangeable? If not is there much stuffing around to fit one in. I'm an Auto Electrician so the whole wiring issue shouldn't be a hassle, I just need to know if it's possible to do and if it's an easy job or a pain in the arse to do.

    Thanks in advance, Justin.

Main diff I can think of is AFM vs map.

I believe the dizzy may be different, the gen 3 runs much bigger injectors so you would need to upgrade them (contact me I have a set that might be for sale )

When upgrading the injectors, I don't think the gen 1 fuel rail will support the flow required, but this is not speaking from experience....

I thought the GEN2's where still AFM and ran the same injectors.

I know the plugs are different, but I thought all it would take would be re-wire my loom to the later ecu plug.

haha sorry misread, tought the mines was on a gen3.

Yes what you said is correct, the gen2 runs the afm as well.

The Gen1 and Gen2 3SGTE's are hugely different engines. I would expect even if you did change the wirirng to fit the mines computer it would be even less well suited to your engine than it was to a Gen2.

If you want to get a computer that isn't a complete kludge get a proper programmable system and have it tuned for your setup.

I think that might be the way to go. Any suggestions as to what sort of setup to get?

I only really have one recommendation when it comes to what computer to use. Find a tuner you trust to tune it and listen to what they recommend.

Josh has a good point, talk it through with some one, you need to tell them what you are looking for, and if they know their shit (or aren't on a big retainer by one brand) then they will give you the advice you seek.

I went haltech when I was going to use a gen2 in the st165, but then got this gen3 engine, my tuner said it wasn't the best match to the haltech (which I had already bought) but he could make it work :S

I've done this - Rewired about 14 pins to suite from GEN 1 3SGTE to GEN 2 its all there, except for 1 which needs to be added.

I've also got a Mines style Ecu Its got another motherboard, 8500RPM redline, 18psi fuel cut, will boost to 14//15psi instead of 7-10psi, better on petrol. if your interested PM me

I've done the wiring swap somewhere here.. let me dig it up Its pretty straight forward and easy todo in an mr2

    [EDIT]Found it!

Its not comprehensive but I hope you get the idea..

That really depends on how you define gen1 and gen2. To me there is only really 3 generations of 3SGTE, gen1 ST165, Gen 2 early SW20 and ST185, Gen 3 ST205 and late SW20. Then there are the caldina engines but I consider them pretty much gen 3 engines with different management.

If what the origonal poster is talking about is an early gen2 engine compared to a later gen2 engine then getting the computer to work should be quite straight forward.

The way to find out is to actually trace the wiring

Theres upto 4-5 Variations per year/car/model of the 3SGTE

The main differences ive seen are - GEN 1 MR2s dont have abs std and Powersteer. So its best to compare and check your wiring

That's the thing there are several revisions of the SW20 but the generation terminology is generally used to apply to the engine itself.

Yes you need to know the exact model of the car where the engine came from IE -

    1990-1991.5 SW20 = GEN 2 Engine, GEN 1 WIRING LOOM
    1991.5-1992 SW20 = GEN 2 Engine, GEN 2 Wiring loom (14 pins located differently)

    etc

My ECU is the JAP spec ST165 and he's ECU is the JAP spec GEN1 SW20.

I tried crossing off the same pins in each and i'm left with extra's in each ECU.

The plugs are different also so I can't just swap the pins.

Hey Josh do you know if the caldina uses the 5S block?

No the Caldina still uses the 3S block with the full jacket between 2 and 3. Apparently the blocks have less core shift though. What they do have that is nice is a crank angle sensor mounted on the oil pump and direct fire ignition.
