Cool BBQ in my engine block - all invited

The nothing but trouble car update...
I need some opinions on what to do please people!
So, no longer fuel in the sump, this was corrected by rewiring the e. fuel pump into the ignition rather than having it as a seperate switch.
Engine is a 2tgeu with twin solexes btw.
Anyway now I have no fuel topping up my oil I can clearly see the smoke she is blowing is blue, and worse than ever, and the oil burnt in a week and a half was an entire sump full
Umm yeah - so obviously the engine is in trouble...

OK opinions on what to do please?
Who would spend the money to rebuild/re-ring w/e the engine, and who would just say fk it and replace (and what could I put in for a similar cost to a rebuild - keeping in mind I am a student!)

    All ideas appreciated

    Thats not cool

They tend to lose oil from either the rings or the valve stem seals. 2Ts like to wear the rings.

I personally would rebuild it, just cause they are such a cool engine.

Depending on if you can remove and install the engine yourself (or with help from other toymodders ) it shouldnt be _too_ expensive to get a basic rebuild done.

re-build time!!! cos ur sure as hell not gonna find a cheap 2tg laying around that doesnt need one, if its your daily driver id either source the parts while its driving and just use a heavier oil 20w-50 or heavier if ya can find it, then take her off the road for a week making sure you have access to a lift/borrowable car, then pull it apart

or if ya dont wanna do that take it to a mechanic/engine workshop and get them to do it although that isnt cost effective

[FONT="Georgia"]OK - so if I go the rebuild option...Is it gonna wreck the motor further to keep driving? (it is my daily driver - but we have another car)
I have pretty limited mechanical expertise - would it be possible to rebuild it myself with a lot of advice and instruction?
What parts would I need for a rebuild?
Would it take me months to rebuild it myself?

all methods of fixing it will cost money.

but probably the cheapest option is to get a 2nd hand 2TC or 3TC. but thats a step back for power.

a running one should only cost a couple hundred bux, and then 1 day to swap the engine.

other than that, if you have the money, give it a full rebuild. this way you know the engine is good and it will last.

Rather spend the money than lose any power.

if you found a workshop manual which included that engine, then i don't see why you couldn't rebuild it yourself. However it wouldn't happen overnight, and if you need the car for a daily, i'd just hand it to a mechanic.

Provided the engine atm isn't rattling like a... rattle, the just ensure the oil is topped up and hope that someone doesn't dob you in for smoking like a chimney.

wouldnt advise rebuilding an engine with limited experience. it just takes one loose bolt for catastrophic consequences. although if you know a mechanic and they are willing to show you and guide you then your set.

there would be things missing from a rebuild guide that you HAVE to do

got any friends who have rebuilt motors before? The other important thing you will need is tools. Especially a torque wrench.

Basically if you can get the engine out of the car your best bet is to send it to a reconditioner. You could even remove the inlet, exhaust and things like the alternator to make it easier for them and cheaper for you.

They will pull it apart, clean it, machine it, replace things like rings and bearings and put it back together.

A basic rebuild will be crank bearings honed or machined bores and new rings, depending on how bad it is.

You can keep driving it - just make sure that it doesnt run out of oil (keep it topped up). Being a Toyota you could probably drive it for a decade like that if you really wanted to with no real issues.

    Nope!
I would trade beer for help - but none of the mechanics that have been through work (liquorland) wanna play *LOL*....Actually there may be one guy I could ask, but I dont know him really well, and its hard to trust people with my car!

Now that's something I hadnt thought of - sending it somewhere...theres only two reconditioners in town, neither of which wanted to do it (kept losing my details when I asked for quotes - you know what I mean) and with little competition they are slowwww and expensive!

Bah! You gotta start somewhere, its not all that difficult with a little mechanical thought to it, and some motivation. What you need to do is get another 2T-G cheap, rebuild that one, then once its rebuilt (cos youre not gonna wanna rush it for your first time) take your car off the road to swap it. You can either leave your car to sit whilst you rebuild the second engine, or drive around on it some more (just keep the oil up to it you'll be fine - drove my 3T around for over a year using 1L of oil a day MINIMUM, and it was still going fine the day i pulled it out).

If you get a shop to rebuild it youre going to be up for some big $$. Though I do suggest you send your head to a reconditioner to clean it up and check the valves through, relap them and put all new valve stem seals in. Youre going to be looking at around $400 for that alone

Otherwise a new set of rings, a quick hone (hopefully you get one with a good bore), and some new big end and main bearings and you should be good to go. Oh and hopefully your timing chain guides are still good, a set of guides and chains is gonna set you back $500 nasty but worth it if you plan on keeping your car for a while.

Benefit is if you rebuild an engine, at least then you know its going to be fine for quite sometime, and shouldnt get too many problems for it.

.....And is there beer at this BBQ?? If you were up my way, i'd help you rebuild this engine, but theres plenty people around here willing to help you out and give you a head start

Well...I rang Dominator - theyre nice helpful people - more so than the locals at least!!! However he says he cant get parts for the DOHC model? He said most single cam engine parts would likely be interchangeable - but he wasnt sure about the gaskets, guide plates, tensioners, pistons, and so forth. Obviously people here have rebuilt these before - so where did you get your stuff? What did you use?

Silli - I wish I was there too! Id love to put some of my holidays into drinking and playing cars with ya Would be awesome

If you decide to throw in the towel I'd take the 2TG head.

Don't throw in the towel though, give it a go. you can buy the workshop manual for the 2TG off ebay for $44 (just type 2t-G into the search bar)
