The gauge is in, it's all hooked up as advised. The only problem is when I turn the ignition on the needle shoots up to read 6, when I start the car it drops down to zero and doesn't move even when I rev it.

Just spoke to Rosey and he has the same problem with his GT, so we'd both like some help...please.

    Cheers

    Scott,

Do you have the correct oil pressure sender unit on the engine block? The result you have got would be what I would expect from an on/off oil pressure switch which is what the 2T engines has (i.e. ignition on and no oil pressure earths the circuit so guage gives maximum reading, engine running and oil pressure cuts the circuit and guage gives no reading).

I assume it is the correct oil sender, I asked for one to suit a t18, The one he gave me is an Echlin ignition part number OP6074.

I hope it is the wrong sender, that will be easy to fix.

I notice in ace's post a pic of an earth strap, mine doesn't have that, would that be having an effect.

Correct oil pressure sender unit shown beside the fuel pump (Yellow/Black wire). The spare connector is for the oil temperature sender (Yellow/Blue wire).

    Scott,

Thats the problem allright. I checked the Echlin part number and its just an on/off switch for a warning light.

Try Toyota on part number 83520-30010. Will not be cheap but they last forever (well 36 years so far on my car).

Thanks mate, you're a total legend, if I could rep you again I would.

I'll ring Toyota tomorrow and order the sender.

Glad thats what the problem was, didn't feel like pulling the dash apart again...lol

Is this the part number for the same one you have Mike, if so I didn't think they were still available. If that is the case I would rather have a wiring issue instead of trying to source one of these biatches. Good luck Mate.

I think a send er from a T18 is the same as the 2TG. You should be able to get one cheaply from a wrecker.

If its hasn't already been stated, I'd be connected the earth to the correct earth harness and not the alternator. I have pulled apart the harness is this area on the GT and all earth wires for the gauges are simply joined into one feed wire.

    Cheers,
    Simon

    Thanks simon,

Mike suggested that last night so I have already swapped it over.

I just spoke to my mechanic and the 3T he is putting in the green machine is out of a T18 and he has the sender, problem solved!!

Guys I need help! I wanna get my dash fascia back in today, Ive got the oil gauge sorted but im a bit confused about the amp gauge, white wire to battery positive, but black wire to -ve fusebox? Where exactly?
Is there any reason why I cant run the black one back to the alternator?
    Thanks.

The black wire is a ground wire. You need to add a fuse into the circuit or you'll fry the guage. an Earth on the fuse box is just easier as it already has a fuse built in.

Sorry if my original post caused confusion black wire is -ve from the guage not -ve at the fusebox.

In early TA22's the black wire from negative on the amp guage goes to the "HORN" fuse and also feeds the light switch (on the dash panel) (red) and the light control stalk (flash function) (white/blue).

In later TA22's the same wire goes to the "HORN" fuse and also feeds the front lamp control relay (white), the power window relay (if you have got them) (black) and the ignition switch (black/red).

You cant earth the black wire from the -ve side of the amp guage without a fuse or you will blow the guage.
