Default Didn't put all the bits back in a pad change

I changed the pads in the ae101 corolla on the weekend, and there were these two little V shaped wires that connected at the back edge of the pads and joined the two pads together.

I didn't put these back in as they were too hard to put in with the new pads.

    Are they necessary???

I also forgot to put one of the clips on the side of the pad in too. I hope they aren't necessary. The whole lot is put back together now, but I think the brakes are a little spongy.

I think that might just be the brake fluid, I'm not sure.

Do these missing bits make any difference?

yes they do!!!! well it's not that significant..

but there should be at least one V shaped wire things on on side of brake pads.. they sit on the pad itself.. should be on top... and it pushes the pads apart... (explains the spongy thing.. the wire looks very thin and retarded but apparently it has enough tension to seperate the pad that little bit when the discs are moving)

as for the clips... i'm not sure what you're talking about (without pics ) but i never leave anything out of a brake pad change i.e. clips, the V-shaped thing etc. it all makes a difference between a problem and a smooth run. Don't tell me the clip is the thing that slides onto the calliper? (another reason why the brake is spongy?)

there was one clip that cliped onto the side of the pad and then located itself on the caliper..

Looks like I"ll have to revisit this.

sounds like they are just the rattle gear, ur brakes might make some more noise now, but no real problems.

yeap that should be attached to the pad itself.. and slides onto the outside of the calliper.. i.e. facing you... not the inside one..

Sounds like anti rattle clips to me , so many cars i see have one or more clips missing.
It does cause problems with them missing , squeeling , pulling to one side etc.

is best to put all the bits back but lots of others don't and have no real problems.

The spongy brakes could be cause the pads need to bed in or you got some air into the system when you pushed the pistons back. That happened on the last pad change I did and some new fluid (Needed new stuff anyway) and a good bleed fixed it all no worries.

If you pop the cap on the reservoir, slightly loosen bleed nipple and push piston back in there shouldn't be any way for air to get in on a simple pad change, least not in my experience.

And yeah, i think the age old rule of putting as many things back on as you take off probably isn't a bad idea here

you dont need to open the bleed nipple whilst pushing back the piston,.... just makes a mess ,

if your brake fluid is looking PISS yeloow colour its deff time to change it, brake fluid is supposed to be changed avery 2 years, same as coolant,

but i like to do it after a track day or so, its only $8 a bottle and 1 bottle will do mist cars, 2 bottle to be safe.

PS, NEVER PUSH THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR AFTER CHANGING PADS, you will pick up old rust/scale at the end of the m/cyl and destroy the seals,.....only push pedal as far aa it would normally go

that may be one reason for a spongey feel aswell, but a newish car should still be good,

    brake lines are ok.

I'll have to put those bits back in I think.

After all the bleeding I did, it's all pretty much new fluid anyway.

And yes, these are ferodo pads.
