Which twin coils for 3T GTE ?

Hi,
Can anyone recommend aftermarket twin coils for a twin spark 3T GTE?

I have a microtech and am thinking of something similar to VS commodore twin coils packs to replace the original setup. Anyone done this or can recommend twin coils from some other car that will work and also look neat?

I've seen people ditch the 2nd lot of plugs and just run the one for each cylinder. Why not do that?

4AGZE coils would be sufficient for this also Simon, yet not as readily available as the Commonwhore ones.

Also the 1GGZE i think use dual coil setups.

with the commodore coil packs i think you may have to run a wasted spark system. thats what the factory system runs. same with the GZE coils.

LS1 engine runs individual coils but i checked on the workshop manual and it appears that they are triggered by +ve side. not -ve like the microtech.

you maybe able to switch it on teh data screen. im not to sure.

What about the Bosch HEC-715/6?
These are cheap, powerful and plentiful.
I bought 4 of these bad boys for my ST185's CDI setup (~$35/pc from Petroject)

Ignitors to suit (Bosch 008's) are just under $200/pc from memory.
CDI will set you back ~1k for Autronic, ~1.5k for MoTeC and probably less for others.

guys, remember simons motor runs 2 plugs per cylinder, thats why he's after twin spark...
toobs, the hec715/716 are a good coil, but, he'll kinda need 8
with the commonwhore coils, he'll need 4 of (or 4 GZE coils) (2 posts per coil)

yeah I really need something thta is suitable for twin spark and suitable for the microtech system....
Can anyone confirm if I can use the 4AGZE coils? Also anyone got of pic of these coils or have some for sale?

I used Bosch coils off a Landrover Discovery V8, cheap at a wrecker if you can find them, don't know how much they are new though. They seem to work pretty well...

twin spark coils from a waste-apark setup (e.g. 4agze, 7mgte) aren't suitable for a twin-spark 3tgte. you'd end up with 2 weak sparks if both plugs are in the same combustion chamber.

you can setup wasted spark on them but you need 4 coils, and set them up in a wasted spark configuration NOT sequential ignition.

IE so you actually get 2 of the wasted spark ones sending their charge to the cylinder thats igniting, rather than wiring one coil to the 2 plugs

Have seen 4 x v6 commodore coils used on 3t with wasted spark successfully in association with a microtech lt10s and an "X box" ignitor.
If you want a cheap option - go for hyundai coils. Get them for peanuts at wreckers, are a double coil, .... and being hyundai - rather plentiful. Have seen a few cars take this approach without spark issues.

How? I can't understand this (might be past my bedtime or something!)...... If you have 4 dual post coils, each going to one cylinder to fire together, driven by 4 individual ignition channels from the ECU, how can this provide a weaker spark than firing them in their original intended waste spark arrangement? Wouldn't they be firing only half as often on a dedicated 4 channel ignition setup?

you are dividing the spark energy intended for 1 spark plug to 2 spark plugs.

I havent measured this or anything but its widely accepted (atleast on the msefi.com forums) that in a wasted spark configuration the wasted spark spark plug only gets a little bit of the spark energy while the rest goes to the main one. Not sure how it is im no rocket surgen but it has something to do with the density in the mixture or something Im sure someone else here can explain (or prove me wrong )

Setting up with 4 wasted spark coils essentially in the same as a 4 plug motor with 2 extra coils for each of the the channels piggy backing off the 2 outputs (so you have 2 outputs, setup as wasted spark, going to 4x ignitors and 4x wasted spark coils... with 1 set of wasted spark coils with 1 terminal going to #1, and the second terminal going to umm what ever the other one it goes to is (im sure you get my point (i hope anyway))) this way you get the energy of 2 coils going to the spark plugs in the firing cylinder as intended

I guess the best way to test the difference is try both setups, you need 4 coils for either setup anyway, infact id be very interested to see dyno splots from both these setups
