    Question Frozen Balljoint

I'm currently in the process of rebuilding my LCA's and replacing the balljoints. However, one of the old balljoints is completely frozen in place! I've tried the old WD40 and hammer trick but it won't budge! Can anyone lend a hand? Much appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Alex

Hammer technique, but use two, one held against the back side and the other to hit with. Also put some weight on the suspenion (but not under the ball joint) and it should come out easier.

    alternative 2)

go buy a 'jaw gear puller' from the toolshop....3 jaw are better than 2 jaw, but more expensive.

you'll see how they work once you buy one.

sometimes you have to wire the jaws together so they dont jump off

Ball joint remover i think their called?? Its like a big fork with tapered ends that you bash with hammer, you put it between the joint and keep bashing til it pops the ball joint. Works on the most stubborn of ball joints, no need for WD40.

    i absolutley hatre those things!!!,

get a ball joint splitter, similar idea as the puller,

have you tried hitting the outer edge of the lower control arm, next to the ball joint,

that usually frees it up a bit, diesel fule is also nice and thin good for freeing up rusted seized bolts,

    blake, good luck!!!

Get a ball joint splitter, and use a rattlegun on it instead of the suggested spanner. It'll either get the joint undone, or explode the tool, possibly taking out your head at the same time(!)

I hope you've taken the circlip off the ball joint already, or otherwise it'll never come out. Once you've done that put the LCA on top of a vice so the edges around the ball joint rest on the edges of the vice. Then proceed hitting with a BIG hammer. Works every time. I've done a few, so i should know

He says he's rebuilding his LCA's. You don't rebuild them on the car And if they are on the car for some unknown reason, take them off the car.

Thanks for all the replies guys, yeah the LCA is off the car. Will give the splitter and failing that the vice/big f*#k off hammer trick.

    Much appreciated,

    Alex

bit of heat on the outer and quick spray with water on the inner will help! heat can be an easy tool if used the right way!

I think there's a bit of confusion here?
Are you talking about separating the ball joint from the LCA or the ball joint from the steering knuckle? Seeing that you already have one off, I'd say bj to knuckle.

To separate bj from knuckle, methods described above all work to some degree. Easiest and least destructive is the bj splitter tool. 20 bucks from Supercheap. Abuse it, it's only $20.

If you leave the castle nut on the last few threads and allow the tool to put pressure on that, you wont get bits flying everywhere when it finally lets go.

To separate bj from LCA, there is a circlip which hold the bj in place. Once this is off, strategically placed hammer strikes will free it. In the vice as suggested.

As said before, off the car is waaaay easier (which it is).
