Serious head work, high compression, big cam, sidedrafts, proper extractors (most off the shelf stuff is rubbish) and if its a race motor then upright it. Or just whack a turbo on it.

ehy guys
just wondering does any body out there know what will need to be done to get some serious power( i know its only a 1.3l) out of a toyota 4k engine.
and who would be the best people to speak to in sydney to do the work
cheers guys

hey wde bdy
what do u mean by uprighting the motor
and what will need to be done to turbo it???
For race use the engine mounts, sump and bellhousing are modified so the motor sits level rather than with the factory lean. Needs custom inlet and exhaust manifolds so really not worthwhile unless its a race car. Turbo conversion usually involves mix and matching heads to get lower compression, making manifold or adaptor and then running suck through or blow through with an appropriate carby etc.

Heaps of guys on rollaclub.com (QLD based I think) have worked these motors pretty hard.
Oldcorollas did a thread on how to work the K series I think too. Search and yee shall find![]()
Apart from extra space for manifolds, what is the advantage of standing the motor upright?Originally Posted by WDE_BDY
My guess would be balance, so the pistons are travelling directly up/down and not on an angle.
regarding 4k...
as long as you are doing it to restore your k series car for a fun cruiser with some punch
or you are building it up to fit into a weight/engine capacity class then by all means go for it
but if you are building one up to keep up with your mates skyline, or etc
forget it

Cusco camber tops available for all early mac strut
Gravity would be negligible compared to the forces acting on a piston.
On the other hand, you would have improved oil drainage..
Apparently its mainly for space issues, also provides a better angle into the inlet ports. Particularly with Starlets and KE20s space is restricted, a mate who regularly builds K series race motors has gone as far as putting a cut out into the strut tower to make more room for filters as well as uprighting the motor.

This car here, look closely at the strut tower. More details/pics here -

yes and yes. mostly to be able to have a longer manifold... the Tosco one was fairly long compared to some of the webber ones around... (which makes for a longer length to change from a 40 or 45mm throat to a 30mm or so port)Originally Posted by Ben Wilson

There's a fairly nice 5k for sale in the 'for sale' section

hey oldcorollas
who would you recommened or do u know anyone in nsw who would be the best to approach to build a fairly serious sort of street/track motor or other than the obvious machining that will need to be done would someone with half decent mechanical know how and pateince be able to do it?
and what would be better a set of really good carbies or injection be better?
it depends what you call serious.
for a serious motor, i'd go talk to the people that used to build the 1300 class motors (like Bills old one) or go to a sports 1300 race and ask around.
the K motor is simple. it is not so hard to get decent revs out of it, but it depends how much you want, and where you want your powerband to be...
personally i think the K motor is a good place to start learning how to build motors are the parts are cheap, and if it breaks... mehi reckon do it yourself, but make sure of each step along the way.. the whole measure twice cut once thing
