Does anyone know if the bottom end from say a 85/86 Corolla single cam can be fitted with a twin cam head from an 89 Corolla (both carby engines).
I'm looking for a cheap replacement engine for my '89 Corolla and the earlier models are much easier to find.
Also does anyone know the correct engine name for the 2 engines I mentioned?

it could be done but by the time you convert it you may end up spending the same if not more money (head gasket etc etc ) than if you just hunt around for a little bit to find what you need.
They can be found !

To answer your question, YES you can use an earlier block with a twincam head, BUT you have to change the pistons to the twincam ones as the tops are different, and the crank pulley etc.. I have just done it myself. My twincam motor blew the bottom end, so i got a SOHC 4ac for next to nothing and used the block from it. Just had to swap over the internals (get a piston from the wreckers and she runs like a dream now.
Time wise just get another 4af , if you ring around you should source one for the right price.
