    Default Caltex Vortex

Anyone had issues with a 18RG pinging on Caltex Vortex? not just from the one servo either, several? The only other fuel ive tried is the Shell Premium (not optimax) and it seems to work fine

    Hi,

Yes. It pings a little on Vortex. I have found the engine runs its happiest with BP Ultimate.

I have heard murmourings from friends in the Eastern States that Caltex Vortex is not the 98 Octane it is advertised to be...
And in the interests of fairness, I openly invite anyone to prove me wrong...

theres a difference between MON and RON and the final real octane rating of a fuel. oz rates it fuel on RON, and technically vortex does come in at 98, however i suspect the unadvertised MON rating of the caltex fuels is completely shit hence why so many perfrmance cars have issues running it in preference for BP or Mobil (Shell is just too unreliably unstable)

GOOGLE mon and ron if you have NFI what im talking about

    cheers

Actually Vortex 98 was quite a good fuel from memory... definately had a higher fuel density than all the others last time I saw the datasheets.
For some reason I can't find any datasheets at either Caltex, Mobil sites.

    Shell Optimax
    http://www.shell.com/static/au-en/do...ptimax_tds.pdf

    BP Ultimate
    http://tds-au.bp.com/bpglis/oztds3.n...b?OpenDocument

Closest I can get from Caltex is the MSDS
    http://www.msdsonline.com.au/msds/ms...=&uselogo=TRUE

And I can't even access that on Mobil's site... only TDS on Jet fuels and similar.
    http://www.exxonmobil.com/pdssearch/...oseLanguage=en

    Out of Ultimate vs Optimax
    Ultimate has less sulphur
    Ultimate has less Benzene

Nothing else is comparable as they provide bare minimum data now!

Personally I put greater preference on the age of the service station I go to than the brand... a servo that has just had new tanks put in won't have used those tanks for diesel, leaded, ethanol etc. and won't have a sludge build up yet.
I usually end up using BP servo's most of the time as they tend to change their tanks and update their sites more often than the others.

Last time I checked Vortex over here was 96 with injector cleaner in it.

I'll also point out I got my worst economy ever on Vortex.

    Theres 2 types of Vortex.

Theres normal Vortex which is 96, then theres Vortex Platnium which s 98.

Not all the servos sell the Vortex Premium and I know of only 1 Woolworths/Caltex that sells the Platnium and thats in Hornsby, all the woolies/caltex sites seem to have th standard vortex stuff.

Off all the petrols ive ever used, Mobile Synergy was by far the best and I got my best fuel economy out of it (20v) then BP ultimate's performance was pretty much the same but fuel economy was a little bit down on the Synergy.

good point Dom-AE71, i found this:
    http://www.caltex.com.au/products_oi....asp?section=1

However, it appears normal Vortex is 95 RON, while Vortex 98, is 98 RON. Vortex 98 is currently being rolled out, starting in NSW

after 2 full tanks of vortex.. (the most expensive they had), it's clogged the injectors and ports so bad the car wouldn't run and began chugging..

never had this problem with optimax and ultimate, i personally prefer ultimate

Anything to support this or it it just off the grape vine?

From personall experience with racing motorbikes BP ultimate and Mobile Synergy are certainly the highest qaulity i found. I tried them all.
I also managed to seaz a big end bearing in my two stroke because i was trying Shell Optimax. Turns out the premix oil does not mix with the fuel as well as it should hence lack of lubrication to big end bearing! Not only did we find this out practically but we also had it lab tested.
