Caltex Vortex

Caught the tail end of a story on the John Laws show that Caltex is doing refinery upgrades at the moment and has a government dispensation to import fuel that is of a lower standard than Aus regulations but don't have to advertise the fact.
Has anyone else heard this?

I havnt heard that story...but i am surprised how much difference petrol can make. im not sure if its just coincidental, but i find even 7-11 premium (dont even know wat it is??) runs better than caltex vortex that i have purchased in for 18RG.

ive tried a couple, iv found:

what i did was fill up, from closer to empty, bout 46 litres, then drive all week til 450ish kms, then fill up again basicall, and see what i used
optimax, 37 Litres, 450 kms
caltex vortex 98, the motor ran better, 39 litres, 450 kms.
bp ultimate, 38 litres, 450kms, motor ran best.

of course ther are variables, like amount of freway driving i did etc, but yeah.
ultimate is what i use.
im gunna try e10 premium and synergy next time, might do e10 this week

Caltex and Mobil are the same company and they share refinery output. Simple as that...

what comes out of the refinery may be the same, btu the additives/octane boosters put in after the refinery is what makes it different.... or so was the rumour that i heard

Supra is run on exclusively BP ultimate, rona gets any 98 ron fuel but definately feels better and gets best economy on BP ultimate.

I get 12L per 100km on ultimate and was getting around 15L per 100km on Optimax. Vortex 98 is somewhere in between.

Since when have Caltex and Mobil been the same company? I know Caltex and Ampol were the same, but I thought the other two were distinct.

the merger was about 6 years ago to form the largest company in the world

I had a similar problem with Vortex when I had my 2T-GEU, used the other premium petrols and it was OK.

My mistake... Chevron and Exxon were both born out of the Standard Oil Company in the US, possibly the cause of confusion.

I'm certain they share output in Australia though... Part of the deal of closing the Mobil refinery in Adelaide.

Mobil Synergy 8000 and Vortex 98 are not the same product.

Synergy is a far more superior fuel.

I think Datrally or one of the workshops in Vic tested fuels and Vortex was the worst. BP Ultimate and Synergy 8000 came out on top.

I can certainly beleive that BP and synergy are the highest qaulity.
Stu is right when he says that yes, they may come out of the same refinery but the addatives that each company uses are different!

Its without a doubt tho, Mobile Synergy and BP Utimate are the finest qaulity fuels on the Australian bowser market. Synergy is hard to come by tho. They do not even sell it in my home town of Tamworth which is population 60 000.
