    Default HID option for ae86

just wondering if anyone has installed HID headlights into their ae86 (because the stockers are terrYble, with a capital Y)

what im really wondering is if i should get the normal H4 kit, or the H4 high/low kit. in other words does the HID on normal low beam improve visibility 'hekticly' more than standard?

looking at getting 6000K if that helps

There are a buttload of kits out there, but a majority of them are shite!

I'm looking at doing the same thing, and got onto a kit made by GE (general electric) and also a kit made by philips. I'm an electrician and in the commercial world, both of these lamps are quite good quality, so i think if you go for a reputable brand you cant go wrong.

6000k, is the maximum you want to go if you are looking at a brighter light, the higher the "K" rating the higher the burn temp in the arc tube, it doesnt actually mean they are brighter.

The light output actually drops off as the k rating is increased.

Let me know if you want to go through with buying a kit and I may be able to set up some sought of group buy.

    cheers

my understanding was the higher the K the further up the colour spectrum it went.. as in 4000K is white white... 5000K is bluey white... 6000K is well into the light blue, 7 is starting to turn purple?

Well, I'd be interested if someone can come up with something worthwhile - the lights on my RA65 are complete crap, and anything to get a bit more out of them would be fantastic - I'm also not at all interested in 'unwanted attention' if at all possible!

For optimum lighting you want somewhere in the 4grand K. I think its 4700K.
Youd need clear lenses and a projector. Hidplanet.com has alot of questions answers...
Just a note, they will be illegal.
They are awesome to have, but some "50% brighter" globes is always a easier, cheaper and safer (legalities wise) option.
I had 6000K ones and they were realll white with a hiiint of purple.

In most states you need to have an automatic leveling system, and headlight washers for them to me legal..

i was hoping to go this way, but i think im going to end up getting some good reflectors and +50 bulbs..

In NZ HID "kits" are illegal unless the whole housing is replaced with an HID housing as the reflector patterns are very different. I would assume Oz has similar laws so may pay to check.
What I did for my car is use a twin relay setup (one for high and one for low beam) hooked direct to the battery and triggered by the normal headlight wiring. This significantly increased the output of standard bulbs and was able to cope when I added 130/100W bulbs. Be aware though that these generate a lot more heat so may melt your housings or burn off the reflective coating faster than standard bulbs. This level of bulb output may also be deemed illegal but is much less obvious.
My approach would be upgraded wiring and run the Plus 50 type bulbs if you want full legality, or go to the 130/100's if you are willing to take the risk. HID's seem (at least for quality ones) way overpriced for the results you get.

I also melted my headlight plugs to the bulbs when i was running 90/130's which is particularly inconvenient when you blow both low-beam bulbs in one 10km trip.. and are driving to sydney in the wee hours of the next morning,.

it is true, as the "k" rating increases it also steps up in the colour spectrum.

The "k" stands for kelvin, which is a measurement of heat (in the arc tube)

get the best lenses you can buy (Cibie/Hella etc??) and then get plus50 or Plus60 bulbs and you are halfway there....
if you want more, up the wattage.

HID kits are overrated. a full HID assembly seems to be better, but the lights ARE brighter than normal lights (which is why you need leveller etc) or so it seems..

    That would be degrees Kelvin.
It's the same scale as Degrees Celsius, but the Kelvin scale starts at the theoretical "absolute zero" -> -273degC

    That means, 0degC = 273degK

Thought about making some 'headlights' yourself?

Get some small spotties, and some small cat eye type lights, make up some brackets, and cover the rest up.

Streerfighter bikers have been doing it for ages. Looks the goods too. Plus it means you can go for 100Wglobes etc. BAM! Brightness

I think it would look the goods too. mMMm Chromey goodness.
