This is the only series 1 MS53 pic I have, and of course its Stitts Wagon
Watch this space for more pics Stitt will get someup shortly.
The MS53 Crown Custom Wagon was released in 1968 thru to 1971 and was a flagship model for the Toyota Fleet. It was the only 6 cylinder 7 seater wagon in its class and was a cut above the competition with its standard features and impressive list of factory options. The Crown Deluxe sedan and Crown Custom Wagon were top of the Toyota line.
Billed as a luxury level vehicle the Custom wagon boasted a glove-soft vinyl interior, Lush deep pile carpets and reclining bucket seats with 24 reclined positions. Features included "Glareproof Guages" and well apointed instrumentation with a combination of 3 speed column shift Auto of 4 speed floor shift manual.
Like most of the Crown range there was a facelift model which was released in January 1970 yeilding 2 distinctly different looks for the one very cool wagon. Since I am Series 2 Biased Stitt will be adding allot of content to this article in relation the range and particularly the series 1.
Engine: 2M
The 2M is a 2253cc inline 6 cylinder with overhead cam with crossflow head and hemisperical combustion chambers. With a 75mm bore, 85mm stroke and a lack luster Compression ratio of 8.8:1 it produced its peak power of 115hp@5200rp, Peak Torque of 127ft-lb was reached at 3600rpm. All being fed thru a single 2 barrell down draft carby.
More to come......

The series 2 MS53 (the best looking one ) received some sublte changes to the rear tailgate with a revised combination rear lights and relocated rear trim strips, the biggest change was forward of the firewall.
The entire front assembly was revised with a less rounded profile and fewer components (Its also lighter) otherwise the series 1 and 2 were very much the same.

I finally managed to track down a local (Australian) Road test for the Series 2 MS53
They seem to have made a minor Typo with the model, The pics clearly show the Crown Custom badges as opposed to the deluxe so not sure what the go is there. Either way is an informative article.

Hey Toyman, is it your model that the chassis starts getting a bit wider and therefore a bit easier for a 1UZ-FE?
Is the chassis any different at the rear compared to a sedan? I am looking at using one for my rod's chassis and my rod is a wagon, thought a wagon chassis might not kick up as high as a sedan at the rear.
Any info would be great. Thanks, Rod
Hot Rods,
The MS53 has a different chassis to both the sedan and the MS57 wagon.
The 1UZ can be squeezed into anything if you try hard enough. The MS6x series chassis is wider than the 50 series tho so will make for an "easier" basis to start from. However good luck finding one. My old MS63 was the only 1 I have ever seen for sale and there are rumoured sightings of less than 10 MS63's in the country.
Equally as rare is the MS83 which if you can find should be cheap as they are nota popular model. If you wrecked an MS63 to build a hot rod I'd probably have to come over and bitch slap you. BY all mean butcher a sedan (MS65) tho, they are everwhere. as are the MS85 Sedans.

Thanks, thats great info! I might keep my eye out for a Ms83 for a while but i think the easiest choice will be a MS112 sedan. As they are nt IRS the room between the rear tubs is 1100mm compared to 900mm on a MS123 and 900mm in the back of a wagon is minimal.Originally Posted by TheToyman75
I would rather use a UZS131 as i could retain the running gear and chassis but i am guessing their rear suspension take up a bit of room too.
Rod
Is this the sort of thing you are talking about. :-) MS83 with a 1UZ fitted. I have attached a couple of pictures of my UZS83. (i hope they work)
yep thats exactly what i am talking about! Is the rear chassis different to a sedan? The chassis in the sedan kick up alot over the diff which will rob me of floor space in my hotty.
Love those photos, now i have seen one i dont reckon iihave ever seen one!
On second thoughts i might go the MS63, i like a bit of bitch slappin!Originally Posted by TheToyman75
The chassis is the same whether its under a sedan or a wagon. They all come up the same height over the diff. The only exception may be the ms123 with the irs rear.
thanks for letting me know, i will move away from the station wagon chassis as like you said it is no different and obviously hard to get. The IRS in the MS123 does reduce the amount of room quite a bit. I am waiting on a measurement of between the tubs from a UZS131 as using one of those would be the best conversion i think. Hi just after some info, i was under the impression mine was a MS53 but its plated as a MS55.... other than owning a series 11 mustard sedan 10years back i know very little about them.
1969 build so im assuming it is the fully imported model? power discs on the front.
