so would it be hard to get a r154 to bolt up? and how much do the usually cost?
it will to an extent. Like any gear box. the one you have is the one you want! the beefier version.

With all the discussion . Is a 1jzgte with r154 not the best option. What you save on the engine (2jzgte)can go towards the gearbox. Performance will still be over the top.
And now for the sales pitch - E mail me if interested in a 1jzgte and R154.
or have a look on my site.

not too hard. Depends on the trans tunnel. If it was designed for the W58 then it would probably be too small and need to be beaten out OR cut out and weld in a trans tunnel from a manual front cut. Your looking at any where between 1100 to 1600 for an R154 with bell.
a Mate just busted one and had to search for one. not cheap.
Getrag v R154 is a tough one. Without driving and breaking both how can you tell which is better? I'd personally go for the R154 as they are easier to find, cheaper to rebuild if you bust it and are plenty strong for what most people on this forum would want.
Again just my opinion and yes i have an R154 and never busted it.
There is also the small matter of fitting an Getrag in the tunnel as from what i've been told thay re much taller than the W58 and R154.
OH and the shift comes out about 2" forward. IIRC
Should that be 1986.5? i.e. introduction of the Mk3. As best I can tell, my Gen2 engine came from a 1987 build car, and it definetly had a steel-sandwich plate W58.Originally Posted by CrUZida

I've seen pics of a getrag in a JZA70. can't remember where now tho.
I'd rather spend that getrag dough on a hard core helix gear set![]()
How about the fact the R154 shifts like a truck box?![]()

Far point they suck teh shift.....Originally Posted by JustCallMeFrank
compared to the w58, so does the getrag!
I have driven several R154 boxes and they shift fine. Your syncros must be tired or the oil too thick.

Wilbo knows the cut off date I think, its in the EPC.

Perhaps there was no definitive cut-off then, and they just decided to use some of the older alloy-plate boxes up.Originally Posted by CrUZida
I'm assuming the cutoff you mean is ~08/88 (?) which is when they all got revamped, and the 1G went Gen3.
