    Default replacing axle bearing ??

    hi all

how the feck do you get that bearing collar/locking ring off the el punch and cold chisle isnt working i've heard you need a press but how the feck do you press it off i've got a 12 tonne press but i carnt see how it's gonna work also i've been thinking of getting the oxy on it and heat it up but i am thinking it might deform/weaken the axle

any ideas on how to get it off bearing collar thingo

use a press and two bearing removing plates under the bearing. press on the spline end of the axle to push it down and out of the bearing.

bearings are usually really tight on the axle, and can take a bit of elbow grease to get off.

    the red is the plates/
    the yellow is the bearing.
press down in the direction of the arrow.
the things on the side are what the press plates should look like.

    Hey Sam

I have had that problem on a few occassions. The cold chisel usually works in most cases. When it doesn't the only way around this is to use a angle grinder - 4" or so. Start in one spot and work your way down grinding the width of the retaining collar.Go down until you are about 2 or 3 mm from the axle and the try the cold chissel again. If it stll wont budge then do the same on the other side of the collar and grind down the same amount. Use the ciold chissel and I guarentee it will come off.

    Cheers

hmmmmm my 12 tonne press is to small for my axles to fit like slidy said to do cheaply made poo

but i'll just have to do it the other way like todd said i was using a drill to drill 2-3 holes in the collar but that did'nt do didly squat

so let me get this right befor i go cutting it all up

cut like the red line right ? if you cut like the yellow line i'll hit the bearing although were changine bearing so it doesent really matter me very confused

I normally cut on a bit of an angle, I find that I can then cut it without knicking the bearing retainer plate (big flat thing). Ive done plently of bearings in this fasion. Pumping the new one on with a press is easy, you need about 1.5 tonne of pressure if you grease the bearing/shaft lightly with high pressure grease first, and you dont need much size on the press, just need plenty of space for the axle to protrude.

Also, Ive found if the bearing has been on for quite some time, you can actually break those bearing press plates (whos going to buy an expensive ubreakable one for home use??), so the grinder works out quicker and less hassle. Just be sure you dont knick into the axle too. I find the 1mm thick grinder wheels to work a charm. Do 2 cuts, one either side, and when you whack the cold chisel in, it will fall apart into 2 half moon shaped peices.

yah, i do same as Oman... have the body of the grinder parallel to the axle itself, to reduce chance of cutting the retainer shoulder...
    1mm cutting blades ftw!!

the bearing retainers are quite strong... and you'd hope so too!!

oh i've spent the good half of today smacking collars and bearings off all i can say is the grinder trick is by far the easyest way around the problem major thanks to all

1mm cutting blades are good but after a bad incerdent with one breaking any trying to hit me i've been using 2.4mm is it? blades

    thanks
