why no just get the outer edge of your flywheel lightened to buggery and re-balanced?
Ironically, your suggestion is far more likely to result in detached feet than anything Ed has suggested.

Excuse the complete novice here, but why?
If you're going to sandwich the flex plate between a custom flywheel & the crank, why not remove it altogether?
Or is it because the pinion ring is on the flex plate of a Supra (All the autos I've dealt with had the pinion on the torque converter)

yeah, smaller friction surface with the flex plate behind means that you dont have to have a large billet of steel right out to the dia of the ring gear. saves weight basically, most importantly, save weight at a large radius - but as mick suggested, too much weight loss makes for a bitch to drive in traffic

from a saftey point of view ed, i would be incorporating some safety for your feet, via a ballistic blanket and also some form of shielding around the trans tunnel if things do turn sour, which can occur with big hp.

I've posted pics before of the setup used on an Atlantic spec 4AGE here in NZ, as King Mick has said though its pretty much race only and was done to allow serious (10k rpm plus) revs.

Here is a picture of my flywheel I made. It took me about 15 hours to make. But that did not include all the measuring and calculating.

Cast flywheels really aren't too happy with being machined, and doing so is likely to cause them to fail.

I thought that straight after i posted it.. i was probably a bit vague in my thoughts in the first place, every flywheel ive ever lightened has been a steel one.. i wouldn't think of lightening a cast one..

that said, you could do it with a cast one.. as long as you heat treated etc.. of course that would be a much more expensive option that just getting a steel one made
