when i turbo mine i plan on leaving it there, but putting a heat shield of some sort infront of the turbo, couple of sheets of steel or something, as apparently with the turbo soo close to the firewall, you can feel the heat inside![]()
My query is whether or not the under bonnet lining is flammable.
Im currently doing an engine conversion on my AW11 and the turbo sits quite close to one part of this lining (about 5mm gap)
Is there any chance it would catch fire? Should i remove it and raplace it with something thinner? If so what should i use?
Cheers
Matty

I would highly doubt it is flammable as it would be designed to withstand a fair amount of heat. It would be a good idea none the less to put the heat shield under there anyways.

I would be suprised if it will burn
If you wondering, and going to possibly remove it anyway, then put a flame to it and see what happens - if it burns you didn't want it anyway.
you could always get a small gas bottle and lift and edge back and test it on the back. this way you will know for sure and any scorching will be hidden behind it! just take the engine lid off and do it somewere safe and have some water and somthing to smother it if needed. i dont think you will need to put it out!
most of them seem to be a fibreglass sort of stuff. I have seen one melt with a turbo very close to it but not burn.
If it gets oil soaked in it from a leak somewhere then the fire will be much bigger and more likly to occur than if the oil is just sitting on steel. like the way wax burns much easier with a wick than just in a puddle
cheers for all the info guys, i'l try fit the heat shield on the turbo and see how it goes. Might have to get an extinguisher under the seat

you should have one anyway!Originally Posted by Wildsupra

have a look at my bonnet lining if you like, it's been noticibly effected from the heat from the turbo which is about 2 inchs away from it with no heat sheild. I think it's pretty safe to say it's not going to be real flamable though.
I have also seen a turbo heat bag that works amazingly well as an easy to fit heat shield. IIRC the one I saw was made by PWR. It was just (some kind of fiber not sure what can withstand that kind of heat) a bag that fits over the exhaust housing and clips together with press studs. I could touch the bag that was right on the turbo straight after the car had been driven.
