Engine Smoke diagnosis required
Hi I have got a 1981 Crown with a 5me motor. Noticed on the way home from work tonite that when I put the foot down to the floor it left a cloud of smoke behind- Visable in other car heads lights. It blows no smoke when started but does have a fuelly smell which I put down to the increased fuel pumping in to start on cold mornings.
How can I tell if this is unburnt fuel or oil ? and does this mean the engine is on the way out. I recently changed the oil into semi syntheic and a friend has told me you cant see smoke when this oil burns- Not sure if this is true. ???
I know when cars blow smoke on starting it usually means valves stem seals are gone but what does smoke mean in this case

oil = white,
if ur valve seals are letting oil in, that happens after the car has been sitting and it slowly gets in, not when u r accel
as its efi, most likly worn rings, ie oil burning. If it stops happening after the engine is warm its more likely to be oil as well.
Hard to tell just from seeing it in headlights behind u cause u get a silhouette effect.

its likely carbon coming out of the engine when you actually let it breathe properly
and i believe all oil burns blue
water burns water, coz it turns to steam, you get this on cold mornings coz of condensation
give it a kick in the pants again in daylight and im sure the cloud will be black, which will be carbon deposits making their way out

Doesnt seem to matter if its hot or not just when I give it a boot full. Never when its cold or on start up

I dont get VG fuel ecomony - So i might all fit together....
That leads me to the next question how to stop it running rich...

what economy are you getting and how do you drive? where do u shift usually?
try give an approximate liters per 100km if u could

its a sensor fucked out, or its jus a bodgy tune but i dindt think that happened with stock ecus :S

the basic things to check would be the coolant temp sensor and the AFM. when a coolant temp sensor is faulty, it often tells the ECU that the engine is always cold, even if its not. this causes the ECU to richen up, this would be the smoke that you are seeing. (if thats the problem)
check/replace the coolant temp sensor and see how you go.
the AFM is a vane type? (flap) if the spring is to soft then it allows the flap to move too much and this tells the ECU that a lot of air is going into the engine, even though its not. Again, causing the extra fuel to be put into the engine.
i have a crown with a 5me in it. the fuel consumption is woe full. but i dont care, its only a cruiser

My fuel ecomony is about 16l/100 KM standard unleaded - But my tripometer thingy is not working- So I have to guestimate a little
is currently running on prenium so hoping for better

AFM = air flow meter
measures the amount of air goin into the engine

Not sure it can be stopped unless it is really bad then something might be wrong.
Most cars of that era do the smokey carbon thing when you up them so don't stress to much about it.

Had another look in the daylight doesnt look bad but I thinkits running rich. will take it to a EFI dude to look at it. CHEERS EVERYBODY

What weight oil are you using, if you've gone Synthetic it's probably too thin and getting in the rings as others have said, for a car of that age I'm thinking 20W/50 maybe? I'm sure the 5M-E boys will chime in with the right one....
