I run my 3K on 98![]()
G'day guys
Is there any advantages in running 98RON Fuel in my 22RE Powered '86 RT142 Corona? Or should i just not bother?
I've upped the timing to ~7 degrees BTDC (with check wire in) and It does feel a little more responsive.
Im yet to measure any fuel economy figures. I'll keep you updated if anyone's interested.
Cheers
Alex

certainly can't hurt. I know on the 22R hilux i have, it ran a treat with 10-12degrees of advance, and got a few more kilometers to the litre as well.

I did this on my RA60, which is currently sitting about 11-12 degrees BTDC. I found this combination of advanced timing and 98RON fuel made it a teensy bit more responsive, but it also improved my fuel economy more that more than offset the price difference.

10-12 Degrees of Advance?
Wow! A bit of an advance from the factory 5 degrees!!![]()
Any overheating Issues? Do you run a colder plug to compensate? Upped the cooling system somehow (run a cooler thermostat)?
Just trying to scrounge for some cheap kilowatts!! Without killing the old 22RE (not ready for a conversion juuuuuust yet)![]()
I run my timing at full advance and also on 98ron. Seems to rev up quick, but havent driven the car in 6 months so i forget! No licence lol
Think of it like this, if you pop the motor.. 100 bucks at the wreckers for a fresh one ? lol
Wes.
Bitch, come over here and have sex with Charlie Murphy..
Im Rick James bitch!
Actually, the 22RE's tend to fetch a tad bit more than that at the wreckers...Originally Posted by Wezelton

In all seriousness - anyone know what would be a safe amount of timing I could load up without causing any detrimental effects to the car? Would there be any other supporting modifications or tweaks i could do on the cheap?
being an 86 corona, it has knock retard, so advancing the timing beyond safe limits will only rusult in the computor retarding the timing
on my 4k i advanced the timing to ~15* (factory 8*) and on 91 it knocked under load at low revs, and seemed to fight itself
with 95 it runs beautifully. and doesnt fight itself
halfway thru the tank and seems much better
with a factory 5* you should be able to run 10 - 15 with 98 octane
the knock detector will save it poppng anyway![]()

If you want to be really safe fill the thing with 98 ron and take it down to your local dyno. They should be able to test to make sure its on the safe side of pinging.

Yes it is. I've never heard any pinging since i've done it.Originally Posted by avante
No. No. No. Car has behaved perfectly normal, only with better fuel economy and a slight bit more responsiveness.

Provided it's not pinging the engine should be more efficient - if anything it will produce slightly less heat.
