    Default 5mge turbo

I have a 5mge i want to turbo but im not very sure how the factory ecu will cope with it. i want to run that combined with a microfueller and and probably 2 550cc injectors, how would this go?. Im not going to run big boost, but i have an old hks kit with a 32mm external gate and a roto master to4 turbo, the turbo has a .69 hot and an ar 60 on the compressor, any body have any ideas on when something like this would make boost?
Also just going to use the supra factory intercooler and run about 7psi.
Would this turbo setup work ok or should i just go for a factory 7mgte manifold and turbo?

hi mate. wouldnt it be easier and cheaper and more beneficial to just put a 7mgte in there? They are cheap as chips to buy nowadays...

the factory ecu would not cope very well. all of your afr's would be dodgy. im unsure if u can use a 7mgte one?

yeah probably would be easier to do a 7mgte, but i just fugured this would be something different. might work ok with the micro fueller giving the extra fuel, well thats my theory.

If you have the time/money/parts and access to a dyno to tune it, go for it.

    But remember, different = costly.

well what my brother has done with his tx5 well is in the process of doing is running a larger injector that standard before the inlet of the intake... it works on a presure regulator system... so when the manifold reaches a certain presure the injector is enabled and extra fuel is squirted into the inlet...

not sure if the same idea would work on the 5m

    It has been done before...........

The great thing about early Toyota EFI systems with vane AFM's is they will keep pushing fuel untill the AFM goes full deflection, (max's out). So as long as the vane doesn't hit its limit it won't lean. The only thing is I have no idea what % over you can go in airflow before this happens on a 5M-GE. The A/F's on your turbo sound pretty good for the mission.

That looks a lot like the Greddy twin turbo manifold that was available for the 5MGE back in the 80s. I have one of those babies.

If you have all the necessary gear to do it, go for it. The standard injectors are 185 cc/min (or so) and from memory XF Falcon injectors are about 215 cc/min and almost a direct fit (including the injector plugs). They may be a potential injector upgrade without going overboard - if idle is a little rich you could potentially adjust the AFM a tad. Also consider a rising rate fuel pressure regulator.

Ultimately, you're going to have to set it all up and run it on a dyno to check your A/F ratios to make sure it's safe!

Check out the CelicaSupra forums, they have a whole section dedicated for 5M-GTE conversions, heaps of people have done it now. From what I've read it's so not worth the time and money required to actually make them reliable. The 7M is known for its issues, but a turbo 5M is worse again.

Interesting. since i started this post i have done some more research and have heard that most people dont have to many problems turboing the 5mge so long as its mild. Alot seem to run with the 7mgte turbo and manifold and just add a rising rate regulator, from what i have read this seems to fetch around 210rwhp which is not to bad when going from 130rwhp. I realise its not the same as putting a 7m in but thats not what im trying to do.
So far i have the turbo kit, supra intercooler and a microfueller and i will be adding a sard rising rate regulator.
hopefully i will make a bit more than 210rwhp with this combo as the t04 should flow a bit more air at 7psi than the standard ct26 will.
Yes i also have access to a dyno and wouldnt do it any other way. i might look into the xf injectors to, but im planning on using a 550cc injector with the microfueller, i will feed that at the throttle body as i have the HKS cross over pipe to fit it to.
I will just keep collecting bits and hopefully it will all work out!

Dont forget to add a big fuel pump with a RRFPR.

Depending on the boost you are running and the setting the RRFPR the Walbro 255 might struggle.

Anything below say 58psi fuel pressure I'd be happy to use the normal Walbro 255, but over that pressure I'd either get the 255HP, or a Bosch.

most of the setups i have read about set the base a 60psi and rise from there one for one.
The cressidas are in tank arent they?
I might have to go and talk to the tuner, as running the microfueller i may not need the higher pressure, maybe just 2 550cc injectors. i want to try and stick with the factory efi as i believe it will be far smoother than running some of the more affordable aftermarket ones, having had experience in that area before.

Full aftermarket will absolutely shit on factory 5mge ecu and piggybacks in every respect. (unless you buy an aftermarket ecu thats over 5 years old).

    MX73's are intank yes.
