    Default 4agze alternator

Hey guys is there anything special about these alternators ? like do they produce higher amps then say a 3y alternator ???
reason i ask is that my alternator died the other day and i have found it posibly to put my reco 3y alternator on it for time been , untill i can purchase a reco 4agze
The 3y bolts up good and with a little bracket its perfect.

So in all i just gotta know if the 4agze and 3y would produce same amps ????

does the alternator you propose to use have a internal or external regulator? the AFM bigport 4agze alternator uses a external regulator. i 'think' the smallport 4agze alternator uses a internal regulator.

stuff getting one reco'd etc. buy yourself a universal Bosch 120amp alternator and fit that up. go to the wreckers and find a ribbed pulley to fit the shaft (by memory mine was from a crummydore).

all of the 3y alternators i have seen are externally regulated good for about 40 amps unless it came off and injected 3y which is pretty rare

I have a spare 4A-GZE alternator for sale... in good condition too (see classifieds section).

I wouldnt use a 3Y alternator unless its the EFI version as banshee has indicated.

The smallport gze alternator is internally regulated, and that's what i've got at home. I can have a look to find the current rating, but i would have a guess it's at least 70A.

i am not to sure if its from the efi model, i know the 4agze afm and map are both 70 amps
only this i am getting chugging and lack of acceleration some times, a mate of mine said that its fuel related maybe injectors??? but i am thinking the alternator isnt copping with the power needed from the 4agze..?
Would the 3y carby alternator 40amps cause the car to chug alot and start splattering ?

when i thought my 4agze alternator was stuffed, i changed the diode pack with one from a regular 4age one, i'd say the other bits swap over too. There was another alternator i pulled apart, and it looked mighty similar too, can't remember for sure, but vaguely it was sv21.

I'd bet that only the outer case is different, so you can mount on the hot side of the engine.
Go to pick a part and rip some alts apart, the best way to learn, and it only costs you a dollar.

They don't like heat and oil, and on a gze, theres usually one or both. Some shielding if you don't have it will help, and replace the seals in your distributor if you haven't

the alternator yes is next to the extractors hot side of engine but i believe that is not the problem as its been working well since i have had the car. i am getting the alternator tested on sat i hope its 40amps and causing my car to chug due to not enuff power..

while we are on the topic
can anyone tell me the wireing for a 4agze alternator,i have one in an escort with micro tech and there is one big wire(obvoisly the charge wire to battery) and two other male spade terminals inside a shroud where a plug would plug up to,on the esky alt i only had one other wire with the pos feed so im unsure where this extra terminal should be connected?
does it just go to positive also to energise the coils inside?
    cheers guys
