St165 Removing engine

Hi all. I bought an st165 and it is the first east/west car I have ever worked on. It has a blown engine and I recently bought a replacement engine and box (from a later model st165). I’m assuming it’s easier to remove the engine and box as one. The question I have, is it easier to lift out the motor? Or drop it down?

Also, the car has the older gearbox with the stitch for the awd. Is it possible to make this rwd, if not I’ll put the Viscous e50f2 instead

drop it down with the box and transfer case attached. If doing it in with jackstands etc, raise the car as high as possible, lower the engine/box onto a trolley/frame and then lift the car over the top. It'll all make sense when you're looking at it.

Didn’t listen to the advice lol. Struggled for 30minutes. Then eventually took it out the bottom. Originally put some wood on the legs of the hoist but it didn’t have enough clearance. So eventually dragged it out on some cardboard. Was using super cheap stands. Any advice on how you guys normally get the clearance?

Drop the motor onto a tyres, 2 jacks with a bit of wood, welded up fame....whatever as long as you can slide it. Then use the engine crane to lift the front of the car higher and then slide the sucker out.
Or do you mean how to get more height in general? Solid timbers under axle stands is one way to get an extra 100 or 200mm - as long as your jack can do it. You may need to do this in several stages using solid wood under the jack as well. If you go slow, dont get super dodgy and keep it balanced its fine. Otherwise you'll need to spring for a hoist!!

Yeah I struggled to get the car high enough. I put some wood across the legs of the engine crane. Then lifted the car until my car stands were maxed out. But then engine was too high. I think I need to put wood under the car stands to get the appropriate height. But would need a lot

Any idea where to get the mounts for the cross member (front to back one)?

I think you are chasing 52225A and 52240 (front upper/lower) and 52230A and 52236 (rear upper and lower).

I always cross reference with Amayama, Partsouq and eBay for best prices. Otherwise there used to be a guy at Penrith Toyota who was one here that was a bit of a whiz with pricing and ordering the hard to get import bits. Unsure if he is still around though.

Also, a thing to note - do not overtighten these bolts when doing it all back up. They have a tendency to strip. Ask me how i know this!
